My dual boot quad was set to W7-64 to run CFSW exclusively till Emerald is reached, because it runs them on average in 4.8 hours, when in Linux-64 it takes 5.50, or 14.58%, which is more than "not as much". ;0)
The CFSW slowness on XP is under investigation (see comments by tech in that forum). The VINA jobs (SN2S, GFAM, DSFL) run faster in Linux, so that's what my Octo is doing now in mix on Linux 12.04 with 7.0.24 client (which is buggy and can cause startup / no computing until manually restarting the daemon). CEP2 has substantial greater efficiency on W7-64 (99%) over Linux (93-95%), so stopped running those on Linux. HCC and other sciences - It's fringe... not worth to bother micromanaging when having dual boot or multi-device OS selection opportunities. What we're longing for is more 64 bit compiles as that in itself gives 6-8% more throughput. C4CW, the only one available in that build is showing these improvements. The new BOINC server 700 software running at WCG is supposed to test which build is faster ... 32 or 64 bit, but don't think that was activated. Some system are faster running 32 bits, even though the OS is 64 bits (client bit build not relevant, as that is just a task manager and does no execution). Do not wish to hijack this thread. In the "Confez" thread a member is progressing on an extensive Windows v Linux dual boot test. Science specific problems better placed in the relevant research support forums. --//-- P.S. For science general WU pool availability, see the WCG Dashboard (think you know it). Some run in lower feeder priority as there are known bugs or WCG is low on stock and does not want to interrupt supply to those that run exclusively on a specific science (HFCC e.g.). Linux only gets 1 CFSW at the time for instance. |

Sek,
Thanks for providing a pretty nice broad picture of how things are running on the grid. There are a few things I would like to add. 1. Yes CFSW is running 1 result per host on Linux (Windows and Mac get multiple), but the new Beta that was released yesterday may change that within the next few days if things run well. 2. HFCC is going to be boosted back up to normal priority shortly. 3. Having GPU work units for beta will be minimal in the time line. There may be a GPU beta, but we do not run 10 days worth of Beta work generally though. A good sampling is usually gathered from a smaller amount of work. We will only run work through if it is deemed necessary to help advance our testing. Thanks, -Uplinger |

We are ready. We have upgraded a lot of components in the system since last year including: adding more RAM on all the servers, adding addition servers to environment, upgrading from MySQL 5.0 -> MySQL 5.5, doing some significant tuning on MySQL, upgrading to the latest BOINC server code, etc.
We also "accidentally" ran a stress test on the whole system last month that allowed us to tune and demonstrate that the system can handle at least up to 1.5 million results per day. We appreciate your selecting us to help us further stress test the environment. Since the nature of the challenge overall is to generate points in the competition, I would participants to select multiple projects (at least 3-4) to ensure that any short term disruption on a single project doesn't inhibit their ability to fetch work. As far as GPU work goes. We may have another round of beta testing during the challenge. However, we are waiting for a review of some data by the researchers. If that is completed, we may be able to run some GPU work. If we are REALLY REALLY lucky and the next beta goes well, then we will run a scaled up beta as we will be nearing acceptance of the application. There are a lot of things that have to go well for that to happen though so we will wait and see. Your competitors should be aware though that it will be a beta test and so unexpected things are likely to happen (and additional steps are required to sign up). |

Thanks a lot for your informations!!
----------------------------------------And of course, thanks a lot for your "promotion" of our BOINC Pentathlon in the "What's new" window on the WCG-Startpage!! Even Gollum doesn't find any words to explain his happyness!! 10th of May comes closer..... ;) And again... THANK YOU ALL!!!!

XSmeagolX ,
----------------------------------------Small suggestion: Whilst right hand top there are flags, to be reached for German/French/English versions, could that page be made to default to English when neither of the 3 languages are system/browser default? Noticed when clicking on the WCG front page link it goes to the German version **. cheers --//-- edit: ** asked admin to link to the English version of this year [now done], which may confuse the French ;P [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 9, 2012 12:09:10 PM] |
