Hello WCG-Techs!
----------------------------------------I hope, you will get informed of the upcoming serverload! The World Community Grid will be a part of the "BOINC Pentathlon". For further information visit the BOINC Pentathlon site: http://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/22_en_Welcome.html The World Community is the third project, hence all credits granted between 05/10/2012, 0.00 (UTC) and 05/15/2012, 0.00 (UTC) will be taken into the BOINC Pentathlon validation. Thus, more workunits will be crunched and the server utilization will increase. I can't expect the exact amount of increased server load, but there are 31 teams signed up for this Boinc-wide competition - including most of the Top10 BOINC-wide teams! Last year, WCG was part of the BOINC Pentathlon as well and the servers had a lot to do, to get the huge amount of workunits validated. In prior of the May, 10th, most of the participants of the Challenge will download a lot of Workunits, crunch them local and will send them back for validation between 05/10/2012 and 05/15/2012. The validators will come to their limit and there was a discussion on this forum about the reasons of that last year. So it will be good to let your responsible Persons (e.g. uplinger or knreed) know prior of what will going on, so they are able to react of this upcoming serverload on WCGrid to do some "preparation" or what ever you are able to do. Mostly, the "newest" project on WCGrid will be crunched, so it is also a good idea, to inform the persons of the "Computing for Sustainable Water" project about the upcoming server traffic and serverload. But in fact, I do not really know, which project will be crunched by the participants. So it's good, to keep all projects informed. I hope, you have enough workunits to crunch and the servers will run stable. Best regards XSmeagolX

Will pass the message and sincerely hope that when you arrive in force it's the feeders that will be maxed (but they've been thoroughly hardened in the past few months, to add lots more distributed computing).
----------------------------------------Whilst you guys may want to focus on the newest sciences, plz do advise any not familiar to WCG to select the "If there is no work available for my computer for the projects I have selected above, please send me work from another project.". When you have depleted the favored science stock, other work will be send to ensure no core goes idle. The best strategy to this is to run with zero connect (Minimum buffer) and zero (Max) Additional Buffer. Those running with the client 7.0.xx will see the host fetching new work 5 minutes before any core goes idle, and getting minimum alternate work if there is a preferred science not in the FTM feeder. Then on next work call the preferred science stock is checked again. Initially when new arrivals start crunching, they'll see a few days lag in their validations when the wingmen take their time. After a few days of crunching, the completed and validated results in a day will start to flow fairly even. Then at end of the pentathlon, there will be a few more days of validations continuing when crunchers have moved off again (but we prefer them to stay of course, or maintain some resource share :O) Good Luck --//-- P.S. If you had not planned already, propose you open up a Challenge thread in the Team forum. Edit: To put in the correct "If... another project" pasted text ;P [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at May 4, 2012 11:01:32 AM] |

... plz do advise any not familiar to WCG to select the "If my computer can process work on my graphics card, then please send me work to run on my graphics card for the projects that I have selected above.". When you have depleted the favored science stock, other work will be send to ensure no core goes idle. Rob, was your copy and paste rather hasty? Instead, I think you mean plz select "If there is no work available for my computer for the projects I have selected above, please send me work from another project."Unless you have some GPU news for us, of course ![]() |

From last year, we just get more members joining WCG and keep their cores focused on this great project...
----------------------------------------So we will see, what will happen this year... :D And of course... Do you have any more information about GPU-Workunits coming between 10-15th of May??????? ;) I didn't open up a challenge-Thread in the team-Forum, because this is not a special WCG-Challenge... WCG is just a part of the whole Challenge, where 5 BOINC-Projects will be crunched in between 14 days...

XSmeagolX,
By creating a challenge and ask the participant team captains enroll, you would create a permanent collective record at WCG of how much the pentathlon teams generated together over here. Then the stats analysis at end would reveal [to all, without having to seek any 3rd party stats places] how much this has bumped production (then giving an idea too for WCG Techs how much this adds to the load, for future planning). Just a suggestion Crunching On --//-- P.S. I've pasted the correct "If ..." option text. |

A Good idea.....
----------------------------------------I will ask our organize-Team of the Pentathlon about this....

Alright, go for it and do try to blow those WCG hopper fuses.

I just asked the organization team about this...
----------------------------------------The problem is, that it could confuse all the challenge-teams that participate on our Pentathlon... It is a Boinc-wide challenge and to be a participant of this event, there is a need to sign in on our pentathlon challenge site... If the techs need to see, what happend to the servers, they are invited to take a look at our stats-page for the pentathlon. Those stats of the WCG-project will be published here: http://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/s...allenge.php?challengeid=3 thanks for this idea.... And our team will be try to blow those WCG hopper fuses on our upcoming event in autumn... The next birthday Challenge of WCG!! :D and again, many thanks for your ideas! We will discuss this on the next pentathlon next year, when there is enough time prior to the start of the pentathlon!! :D

Thanks for this info, skgiven!
----------------------------------------And thanks for your wishes...!!! :D I've posted this in our internal strategy forum!! Just a question to those GPU-Beta-Workunits.... Is there a good chance, that Beta-GPU-WUs will be sent out at this time? It will be a good idea, because a lot of members in the top10-Teams have usable GPU inside their computers... ;D
