No CPU-based betaWU here. Is 0.9days_connect-every and 1.1days_cache the wrong bait to use to get a CPU-based betaWU? They were available for a short time only. It depends if that bait made your machines hungry for Beta units or not. Noticing the announcement and then selecting only Beta and an intermittent project helps, so that only Beta units will download if available. If your cache happens to be full just before the announcement, you can increase it slightly to make the machines hungry again. |

Of course, the trick here is to notice the announcement and then ACT straightaway...

Thumbs up. I hope the river is not filled with mosquitos and snails too. No probably not, but it does have the Snakehead fish in it!! I guess in the summer it does have mosquitoes but no edible snails that I know of. There ARE people that still eat the fish caught out of it up near DC, but most of us would NOT!!! |

tonyh205, gb009761 -- thanks for your responses.
Combining your ideas, I'll try to hit a timing where my machine will be 'hungry' when a beta-release announcement is made. Hmm... wait, that looks like a tough act to follow! Gee, why does it have to be like a hit-and-miss affair? Why does it have to be this hard?... Why doesn't WCG have a "Server Status" where an overview of deployment of the WUs are (also) indicated? See this post. ; |

Welcome to our world. We've been hunting Beta work for years under the same or worse conditions. It's simply a matter of supply and demand and the demand far outstrips the supply.

andzgrid, another useful tip (or does it eventually start to appear like some sort of alchemy?) is to increase your cache BEFORE you make any preference changes and then to make changes to preferences and increase your cache again. This way, you can more safely leave your beta net in the water for longer (I have seen instances when tests have run long enough for a machine to grab, process and then grab again).
----------------------------------------However, as the other sea dogs have already stated, you need to know when the beta fish are swimming in your waters. For that part, there is no real trick, it's more a case of luck. Needless to say, if you do manage to grab a full net of betas, you really have to use micromanagement to get them done as soon as possible because you will only be allowed to catch one per working thread. So there you go, full steam ahead and abracadabra! Crunching in memory of my Mum PEGGY, cousin ROPPA and Aunt AUDREY. |

Same or worse conditions... supply & demand... when the beta fish is swimming... micromanagement... Hmm...sounds like abracadabra indeed !
Thanks KWSN and coolstream. ; |

Do the BETA fish swim on the weekend or mainly on the weekdays? I just want to know as to know when to micromanage stuff.

Bernd, generally during the week - as they need to be fed into the system (which, of course, involves the WCG techs to be around).
