Re: A bunch of Inconclusives...

The "Inconclusive" was looked at some years ago [off-line], and one suggestion made was to name them "Pending Revalidation"... less worrying
-- snip from SekeRob [Apr 1, 2012 7:57:56 AM] post

I also endorse "Pending Revalidation"...
Reserving the word "Inconclusive" in use cases where if and only if we have a case of a truly inconclusive doneWU in that the results do not match some correctness/accuracy criteria, and using another word to reflect the intent of checking a doneWU from time to time. Because there is the possibility that the correctness/accuracy criteria itself may be the one in deviation/error (and not the doneWU) and therefore the need to also calibrate/check the said criteria, the ideal word to be used needs to also reflect that. I think "Pending Revalidation" is much nearer to that ideal word. To continue to use the word "Inconclusive" for cases that are essentially for calibration/checking purposes is not only circuitous, but also goes against the science hallmark of directness, accuracy and precision -- including the choice of words.

Re: A bunch of Inconclusives...

I was looking at mine last night, and it appears that every one of my WUs for as long as I can go back has been marked "Inconclusive", and everyone of them has turned into a "Valid". Don't recall ever having an error on CCW. And my PC has never been used to validate someone else's CCW work. Guess that's the way it goes. It almost seems like I should stop crunching CCW, because every one of my CCW WUs has to be revalidated (redone).

Re: A bunch of Inconclusives...

I get a LOT of _1 and _2 work units for C4CW. Usually that accounts for almost all of my PV ones, to be honest. I've even had a few _3's. So when I saw the Inconclusives, naturally I wondered what the heck was going on. :)

Heck, I have a cache of 0.3 days, and even with that I still tend to return the _1 and _2 well before the _0 ones are returned.

Re: A bunch of Inconclusives...

Ahhh. All the results I returned today are marked valid, not requiring a 2nd validation. I think I got about 18 invalids in a row before today. And I'm running all projects, not just CCW.

Re: A bunch of Inconclusives...

Oh, d oh

my time to check and saw that I got a lot of inconclusives of C4CW project only... was more than eight Inconclusives pages... a lot for me !

Not a new computer, on the contrary.. it is a old on and very very reliable machine.

Nothing special happenned during the crunchs, and I had a mixed crunch with C4CW tasks (most, around 98%) and few ones from CFSW.

Just verify that the common characteristic among all inconclusives tasks was the downloded day and theb batch (April, 15).

Never happened it before with none of my machines. Appear that there is a huge problem with C4CW tasks.

Verified that it happened at least in the last seven days, maybe more, I can't be more precise.

So, I suggest that tech team take a look at it.

Below follow an extract of my more old Inconclusives results waiting for a mate replication to be validated or not:

Re: A bunch of Inconclusives...

And the huge problem continue reaching more batches.

My inconclusives pages are increasing too much, once almost all my returned results are there... too bad !

Just unchecked this project until saw some position from tech team with a fair solution... sad

My Inconclusives went from 3 pages to 0 with no errors. Where's the fire?

Re: A bunch of Inconclusives...

Hello astrolabe,
My Inconclusives went from 3 pages to 0 with no errors. Where's the fire?
Shake, rattle and roll. Some people are being rocked pretty hard these last 2 months.
1) The BOINC upgrade on the server with all its complications.
2) VINA problems with possible new AMD homogenous redundancy class.
3) HCMD2 changes causing more problems with estimated times (plus some problems on servers - I suspect).
4) CFSW units going Invalid. knreed says that WCG is talking with project scientists on this. Perhaps the validation criteria need some loosening. We'll see. But this can cause a lot of Inconclusives for people not used to it.
5) Some people are being at least jarred by running one project exclusively while the new BOINC server code keeps freezing processes until one of them is kicked, making individual projects seem jerky with periods when no work units are available.

confused
All this is almost unnoticeable to people who don't haunt BOINC Manager.
beat up
So you are right, astrolabe. This isn't a fire, just a lot of prickly heat.

Added: People interested in Inconclusive may find this vaguely related: yesterday knreed stated the current requirements
for a host to be reliable, this again is now done at the app_version level. To be reliable a host must have 5 consecutive valid results, be allowed the full daily quota of results for the app_version (120), and have a average turnaround for the app_version less than 2 days.

I'll understand if users were being subjected to Errors or Invalids, but the thread is about Inconclusives, not Errors. I see users crying for a wingman. I just don't see the point of worrying about these unless they error. Then you can start to worry, if it happens.

Re: A bunch of Inconclusives...

Just as a comment... my last 8 C4CW WUs (between yesterday & today) are being tagged as inconclusive sad . This is from a laptop that has MORE than demonstrated it's reliability. All WUs before this were being accepted OK. Guess I'll have to wait until they're cleared... no clue why it started.
