Good morning (9AM in California) RT. I just read your post about saving the oak trees. I was wondering how much the arborists charge for doing their work. Do they just analyze what the problem is and spray them with a compound to kill whatever is killing the tree? I hope I don't have a similar problem here in Prunedale where a lot of live oaks grow. Good luck, dkt This shows you the extent of Oak Wilt in the U.S. ... well it is a bit out of date but the disease spreads slowly ... except when hunters bring infected wood home from their hunting trips (hence the outliers) http://na.fs.fed.us/fhp/ow/maps/ow_dist_fs.shtm Now as to treatment. I am working on a website for the Arborist that is treating my trees. For the next few days you can see the treatment pictures on its front page at http://test3.windmillweb.com/index.html They inject a fungicide into the root system of the tree. The damaging organism is the ceratocystis fagacearum. It infects the root system and the tree tries to block it off unsuccessfully and ends up with the root system completely blocked off and unable to feed the upper part of the tree with the moisture and nutrients it needs for survival. Hope it never gets to your area. The fungicide is *expensive* and you end up losing many of the trees anyway. The pictures are some of those in my "yard" or "garden" depending on where you are from.   Hope you can save many of the trees--i know what you are going through and it takes years for them to grow  |

Good Morning MOT Congratulations Blueprint and imdioxin!! Thanks Gerald. It is too early to tell their eventual fate. We have done all we can for them. I will be planting new ones for the ones that die out. I will be planting Chinkapin oaks where the live oaks die off. So I will have reds, live, and chimkapins. as well as other non-oaks. I won't live to see much shade from them but someone will. Another fine spring day brewing here in the DFW area. Hope you all have as nice of day as we had here yesterday..and hopefully today as well. |

Hi RT, I was just talking with my son Steven about the Oak wilt you have the arborist working with, and he says the really bad one is something called "sudden oak death" that has been occurring in the Elkhorn slew (a wetland that has Egrets). He says that they check your feet (shoes) before they let you in to see if you have any spores for this oak tree disease. I haven't done a search yet for sudden oak death.
