---------------------------------------- Sorry I'm late to my own party things are happening so fast these days I've come along way since the Barton cored 3200+ (which ran at 2.2Ghz and had a TDP of 76.8W) then through the doldrum years with just my trusty Atom powered Netbook Now, on a good day, I can point 68.4Ghz of now X64 the WCG's way for a total TDP of 385W I have gone from 34.91W/Ghz to 5.63W/Ghz since kickoff in November 2004 620% more efficient ! That's progress For those who remember using Intel's Netburst technology/room heaters today's gains in efficiency are probably even higher Make it a good 'un Dave ![]() |

Good Sunday Morning Team Congratulations again founder You are right about coming a long long way. I have another strategy that you guys might like to consider: I build the crunchers and then offer them to relatives for free given a few caveats: They continue to run WCG 24/7/365 on my account and I have TeamViewer access when needed. They can use the computer as if it were their own; no real restrictions other than they can't run another distributed computing project or anything else *super* consumptive and leave off the screen saver (other than blank) and they take care of it as if it were their own. That way I don't pay for the electricity to run it or the electricity to cool it. I still get 95+% of the compute power. They get a super-fast computer for free. I was telling you guys about my problem with Oak Wilt. The bill is around $6,000 for the treatment to save them. . I would not do it but these big Oak trees are why we built the house were we did and it would be relatively barren without them. On the bright side, I am partially offsetting it with website development. Everyone have a great Sunday. ![]() |

For those who remember using Intel's Netburst technology/room heaters today's gains in efficiency are probably even higher Make it a good 'un Dave Well I don't remember Netburst, but I do remember the PCjr and OS2. I was hoping for OS2 to offer a challenge to Microsoft, but if it did, it was only to give Windows another reason to grow as it has. In the early 2000s I was using a laptop at work and when I joined WCG. I don't remember anything about a Barton cored 3200+ and have no idea what TDP is although it must have something to do with power consumption (76.8W). I think I am waiting for the next jump forward for desktop PCs as my laptop has been very quiet since installing Windows 7; I can't even get a driver installed for my oticon ConnectLine streamer for my hearing aids. |

TDP = Thermal Design Power, or roughly how much power a processor can draw ... and how much cooling you need to provide to maintain a stable core temperature if the processor is 100% busy.
Of course, this is subject to all the normal caveats. There's 100% busy with instructions that use less circuits and 100% busy with those that use more. The multi-core nature of today's processors, hyper-threading and the various automatic overclocking schemes that go by several names complicate the issue further. OS/2 was an interesting experiment. For those of you who never used it, think of it as Win95, but available in 1990. However, it was fundamentally flawed in a number of ways, not the least of which was IBM's marketing the the perception that it was tied to proprietary PS/2 hardware. - D |
