If a project is given a resource share of 0 it will not receive any resources unless other projects are unable to provide tasks." How BOINC defines "unable to provide tasks" is the point I am unsure of. Does it differentiate between GPU and CPU or not? If you get CPU tasks from WCG, will that prevent you from getting GPU tasks from "backup" projects?
The GPU(s) and CPUs are handled as different resources by BOINC. If you can get CPU WUs from one project but not GPU WUs, it will go to the backup for GPUs only -- provided this hasn't changed between BOINC versions (and there have been some strange changes between versions).

Odd that this should come up today. My ISP was playing some IPV6 games today which for some reason prevented my Win7 system from downloading WUs from WCG. The WUs were stuck for hours in "downloading" status. The log showed connect() failures.... yet there was no problem sending back the WUs already downloaded as they finished. When my system ran out of WCG WUs, it started downloading from my current favorite secondary BOINC project. My WCG points will be down for a couple of days...

I described a problem I had with Win 7 regarding downloading in the SN2S forum. Of all the things I tried, what really worked was to go to Transfers and do a Retry on one of the WUs in the middle of the list. All but the first two downloaded and the status was still downloading for all the WUs. I was then able to download the second WU followed by downloading the first, using Retry for both. In going back to the Tasks, everything was now running.
