Your holiday made the scheduler think it would not be doing a lot in the immediate future, when being on for a while at 5:02 it ran the fetch routine again and determined it needed 7 more tasks [and yes it said it had 3 out of 4 cores idle]. It is though a scheduler flaw, as same with me when having the system off for longer the on_frac/active_frac were written down so far that the client seems to think it's got enough work to keep the client busy... kind of it spreading the project completion times over 4 cores. Not enough work is initially fetched to keep at least all cores busy, which it is supposed to ensure. What should be is, that a client that has been off for more than 10 days does not get this on_frac/active_frac write down, but as it is, I've seen the very thing here and seen multiple hours of just 1, then 2 then 3 then 4 cores getting busy (wanted to see the true recovery order).

How to fix this: A very undesirable hack iafter a holiday/trip etc is [and no work fetched for all cores], to go into the client_state.xml and set both those mentioned control values to 0.990000 (6 decimals), or just let BOINC on with "Run always" selected in the activity menu to let it accumulate active time quickly (which is of course if you keep looking at it, watching grass grow). Last time I switched in dual boot from Linux to Windows, it took 2 weeks before the work buffer was actually up to the preferred setting... those control values change very slowly and that is with the latest 6.12 (no improvement IMO).

As for killing BOINC to watch a movie... not helping those control values. Better is to add a line to the BOINC cc_config.xml such as

Where the movieplayer.exe is to be replaced by the exact name of your player program as is shown in the task manager (case sensitive). Then BOINC will stop long as your movie program is loaded [or game or render program or whatever program you wish to add, one line per program].
