sad Bad update [Resolved]

Hello.
I have Windows XP (sp 2 or above) and I use the BOINC agent. I've got this computer for 5 years and maybe it's a little old.
I made an update abouth october the 25th and since then I doens't work anymore. The icon at the bottom on the right doesn't respond, it prevents my PC from restarting or shutting down, the boinc never shut down even if I do a ctrl+alt+supp.
I downloaded the installer of the version 6.10.58 but when it comes to "shutting down running instances of BOINC manager" it can't progress.
Thanks.

Re: Bad update

Hello Eowyn,
I presume that you have to power-down to do a reboot. You should try to ( sad ) rebuild your Windows XP system.
What remedies have you already tried?

Re: Bad update

You could try starting Windows in Safe Mode and uninstall BOINC, then restart normal and if everything is alright, install the v6.10.58 client.

Re: Bad update

Eowyn,

To add, at the very least, [re]build your system to get to final SP3 level. MS still supports that version of XP http://support.microsoft.com/ph/1173 through April 2014.

If it already is, begin installing BOINC by stopping boinc.exe [Ctrl-Shift-Esc keys combined to start Task Manager], then running the old installer of the BOINC version that is presently on the system and take the remove option. If that still fails, fetch MS Windows Inslaller Cleanup and get it to remove the BOINC installation. Only when you've cleaned BOINC run the new installer.

Re: Bad update

Finally the problem has been solved. Thanks anyway.

I wanted to shut down my computer but it didn't work, then I made Windows hibernate, then I turned on again the computer the boinc was able to shut down by clicking right so I launched the v6.10.58 client and it fixed the problem.
Before this I couldn't shut down the boinc agent by clicking right.
Now my boinc is working as well but the time for any project is so long with old computer, I don't let it turned on for a long time :/

@Lawrence : what do you mean by rebuilding Windows ? Restoring the system or reinstall Windows ?
I wanted to restore my system but it won't be necessary now.

@SeKeRob : I've checked and I've already the SP3 level.
The Task manager wasn't able to stop my boinc, then the MS Windows Inslaller Cleanup couldn't remove it !

Thank you !

Re: Bad update [RESOLVED]

At least in Windows 7, there is a button at the bottom of Task Manager to enter administrative authority / see all users processes [cant remember where it is in the TM of XP, maybe the menu]. When so, switch to the services tab, if BOINC was installed in Protected Application Execution [PAE], and find BOINC in the list. Rightclick, then select to stop service. On boot, the service will get started again, but you can always do it manually via the same route.

For old devices it may be considered to choose the shorter time / lighter running sciences such as HCC, C4CW, HCMD2 (finishing in Feb, probably).

Glad it is fixed and thanks for noting the "Resolved" in the OP post title.
