Folks, if you haven't seen Extended BOINC Server Outage Planned from 21:...through 8:00 UTC Jan 14th, check it out! It's just 10.5 hours but you may want to make sure your crunchers will have enough work to get through it. Also, you may want to consider forcing an update to WCG on your crunchers shortly before the outage starts. Don't forget about this outage tomorrow. It will likely delay my posting of tomorrow's stats until Saturday morning (my time). |

Good Morning My Online Team Members Things have settled down here a bit. I have no broken computers to fix and only a few website things to get done so this is a bit like a day off. Keith: Thanks for the headsup on the outage. I increased my queues from .5 day to 1.5 days. That should have a swing effect when I cut them back to .5 due to the machines accumulating a lot of finished work units prior to requesting new work...IIRC that is the way it works. I am debating changing projects about then anyway as I am getting really close to my 100 years of HCC. I will probably just add Childhood Cancer and let it run on with both till we run out of HCC. If anyone learns anything more about the GPU project, please post it here. dkt: Any luck on the scan? Everyone have a super day. Make this the best year of your life one day at a time. One of your friends in Texas. ![]() |

I haven't had the "Blue Screen of Death" since yesterday morning and I am thinking this might have been resolved when bringing up IE as there was some processing (don't recall all of the details) which looked like it may have had something to do with the problem. I was surprised that after the install had removed the old IE, the new one for XT says it is IE 8. The information I had said IE 8 would not run on Windows XT.

I was surprised that after the install had removed the old IE, the new one for XT says it is IE 8. The information I had said IE 8 would not run on Windows XT. I have seen that before. IE8 is the last IE that will run on XT (at least as of now). I think it (IE8) requires XP SP3 as well and is just part of M$s way of phasing out XP. Frankly I still like XP and most of my big crunchers are still running it with Excellent reliability. IE9 can be installed on Vista or 7 only IIRC. Likely the only way that they will get my XP machines off of XP will be to stop supporting Microsoft Security Essentials on XP. Then I will have to decide whether to go with Linux or not. I am guessing I would just because of the expense. Hum.. that makes me wonder about Linux-BOINC-WCG-GPU. The reason these machines are on XP for now is that I use TeamViewer and the XP version worked and the Linux version was buggy back when I tried using it. It likely has improved since then. Glad things seem to have settled down. Sounds like it could have been some browser addons in the previous IE that was causing the problem. One of your friends in Texas ![]() |

Don't you love waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to get back to sleep!
----------------------------------------Anyway, looks like the outage is done. Work is reporting and new work coming down. You may want to check your crunchers. Depending on the response they got whenever they queried the servers, the next time for that could have been set to 24 hours out. It all will net out in the long run though. This DDDT2 rain is turning into a nice one. I only need another six weeks worth of run time on it to make sapphire and this rain will help cut that down! |

If you are dis-satisfied with IE8 or can not get it to work, try one of the alternatives, Firefox, Chrome, Opera etc. One of them may solve your problem. Cheers

Good Saturday Morning MOT Another brisk morning here in The Dallas/Fort Worth area; still so much better than the blast-furnace summer we had. On the browser thing, I have always thought that competition is a good thing; that Internet Explorer would still be in the "Netscape" era without Firefox/Mozilla/Opera/Chrome/Netscape/Safari. I guess Netscape is gone now, but it really was the original. Anyway, when I develop websites, I always test them on I.E. and on Firefox. I pretty much ignore the others .... other than I sometimes test them on my Android phone and have others test them on an Iphone. Way too much testing to suit me..It takes much longer to test than it does to develop. Anyhow, you folks have a nice day; a really nice one. One of your friends in Texas ![]() |
