I have never figured out why the US people fear socialized medicine being a military member I have been through socialized medicine for 20 years.
----------------------------------------now that I am retiring from the navy I will again have socialized medicine with the option of paying my own way to private practice. but i do normally get a chance to shift doctors from the same area if i want to. you are defiantly right about making sure when you talk to a doctor you are asking for there help and advice and knowledge and that you have questions you want help with... No doctors are not gods but you defiantly need to make sure you do not bruise there egos. yes health care everywhere is complicated when you really need it. honestly if you are a relatively healthy person with few medical needs one health care is as good as another. The problem is if you have major medical issues there is no good health care plan cause you end up fighting any way you go. ![]() |

Actually, health care there isn't that different from here. However, on to your situation which is far more important. It sounds like you have two herniated or damaged disks in your spine. The disks keep enough room between the vertebrae to allow the nerves inside to go out to various parts of the body. I haven't read anything that indicates you have paralysis or such nerve damage. With the damaged disks, the nerves there don't have the room they need and are compressed where they exit the spine and that is the cause of the intense pain in other parts of your body. I would say the first thing you want is to address the pain. That will allow you to recuperate physically and mentally so that you can move on to address the problem disks. Perhaps you could try something fairly simple - inversion. When you are standing, gravity is pulling your spine down increasing pressure on those nerves due to the damaged disks. The pain sounds a bit less laying down. Take that further to where gravity is working for you. Start by trying laying down on an incline with your feet higher that your head. There are tables that you strap your feet into, lay against and then turn upside down. Yes those two herniated disk are part of the issues i have, but not the worst. My surgeon told me , that he can tell from experience that those aren't the worst causing pain, but are part of the problem. He told me that the pain i having is caused by disks degeneration(disks lost ability do theyr job and have hardened) and i have those chest down. He told me that once those are worn out(bone to bone) pain from those would eas. I'm sure he thought about boning two vertebreas together, but it can't be done for all my vertebreas, but pick and choose the worst onces. After that he told me, that then there would be those herniated disks to worry about still. He said those disk have to be last fixed because not likely those are the worst thing causing pain and there is high risk pain staying even if disks were fixed first. So that was where i got and my doctor fixed my painmeds to what i have now and i have been asking about pain clinic, but it's no go. I'm thinking of ordering new time to my doctor and i will think about questions what i have and right everything down for her and i will take my wife(soon to be) with me to ask those questions and write answers down. I will ask new painmedication while i'm there.I'm 100mg away from daily safetylimit with tramadol and 1000mg with parasetamol so time for new and better meds. |

I will ask new painmedication while i'm there.I'm 100mg away from daily safetylimit with tramadol and 1000mg with parasetamol so time for new and better meds. Be sure to ask what the side effects of the current and any new pain med choices are! I am on a daily Vicodin because the Tylenol I was taking were getting to dangerous liver damaging levels. Vicodin can be highly addicitive, ala Dr. House on tv, but it is not liver damaging so is better in that regard. Sometimes too a change in pain meds can mean a reduction in the amount as it acts differently than the old one, meaning you could feel better with less meds!! Ask too about acupuncture, it is a tried and true procedure in Asia but not in America too much, I do not know about Finland or Denmark. Although a Vet advised it for my dog one time!! ![]() ![]() |

Acupuncture is widely available in Denmark - not only at "free lancers" but at GPs as well.
Tried one needle once administered by a nurse. It did not agree with me and my fibromyalgia at all. Supplementing your post about medicines and side effects, mickey159b: In Denmark we have an unsurpassed catalogue of all medicines available here. To show you a sample of how much info you can get, I searched for Lyrica - an antiepilepticum that is widely used for nerve pains as well, and which I consider bringing up with my doctor for trying myself for increasingly bothersome fibro pains because it was recommended to me by knowledgeable friends here. You can choose the layman's pages or the professional's. It tells about interactions and sideeffects as well and would be a good source for supplementing your doctors info. I'm sure you have one in Finland as well. |

@ little mermaid
----------------------------------------yes I go through multiple web sites for every medicine i get and search for alternatives. there are so many that its important to learn what interactions you have with medicine @ LTDAkiles my wife has degenerate disk disease so i know where you are coming from there. I know in the states they have replacement disks (synthetic) that can be used in some situations as well as fusing of the spine in 2 vertebra areas yes they do not want to do it to too many of them since each one they fuse together reduces your range of motion. and yes herniated disks are a very painful experience as well. yes making a list of what questions you have is always nice. make sure you have a copy for both you and your doctor. also be sure you are careful with how the questions are phrased you do not want to sound superior to the doctor but in a semi knowledgeable question about what the doctor thinks about your options or a listing of what things you need for example --- 1) was wondering if i could get labs for Vitamin D levels, calcium levels, cholesterol? 2) I have heard about an alternative therapy with a combination of cytomel and synthroid instead of just synthroid what have you heard about this and is this something I could try? 3) what were the results of they CT scan on my brain and what dose it mean? what are my options from here? 4) I need refills on the following prescriptions. synthroid, cytomel, gabapentin, diazepam 5) Can I get a referral to an ENT specialist for a 2nd opinion on ... --- once you get done with your visit you go over what answers you got and start making your question list for next visit for each doctor you will run into a different list some of the questions can be asked to your GP but most of them need to be saved for specialists. normally I have 5-10 questions for the specialists and at least 3-4 for each visit for a GP. Again remember you may want to rephrase your questions so it sounds like you are deferring to the doctors superior opinion about whatever you are asking about that way you do not offend the doctor although once you get a rapport with the doctor about the fact you bring printed questions every time you can get less subservient on your questions and more direct. Also have whoever goes with you to the appointment with you needs to listen to every word the doctor gives you if you have any questions about what was discussed then you can write those questions down as well and sooner or later you get much better questions and more direct questions. ![]() |

please accept my sincere thank you for helping. What you did here was far beyond my imagination and hopes. I know that LTDAkiles got a lot of inspiration and help from this, and that he and his wife-to-be will work together on making sure that his health issues are adressed effeciently in the future - something that will contribute to a new form of quality of life for him and his family. As for me: I'll sift through this, and as time and mental resources allow, I'll go ahead approaching research organisations for projects as well as infantry - individual or regiments - to crunch them. When I have something ready, I may want to ask you to look it over ... Thank you Ravel's Bolero |

Your support and help means a lot to me. Didn't know that WCG community can be this supportive. With pain and mental issues(caused by pain) it's very hard to make better health care happen, but i will be taking small steps with my wife(soon to be). I will use tips i have learned from you all and i m thankfull.
Thanks LTDAkiles |

I have doctors apointment next Wednesday.
The bad thing is my nerve issues have gone wors :( 2 days ago i used my new winter shoes to walk under 2 kilometers and after that i have really bad nerve pains and i can't make my toes lift up from the ground and in bed it causes huge amount of pain if i try to move my toes. Walking is like Donald Duck walking and i have issues with balance. From knee down odd feeling or some loss of feeling and really bad nerve pains from knee up to my chest. This is in both sides. Tkis isn't cramping and started soon as i took new shoes off and i have tried massage my legs and notices that the spot where MD tests leg reflex i have very sore spot to touch. I m hoping this is worst it gets, but if goes any wors i will call ambulance to pick me up, because walking is the one to go next. |

With new shoes you REALLY need to be careful, when I buy I a new pair it takes me a couple of months before they become my regular everyday pair! I have had two foot surgeries, one on each foot, and get a new pair every year or so!! As you are thinking do not let this go too long before getting it checked out, if it is something serious time is NOT your friend!! ![]() ![]() |
