undocumented suspend situation?

I stumbled on this in the Event log

16.10.2011 12:03:31 | | Windows is suspending operations
16.10.2011 12:03:32 | | Suspending computation - requested by operating system
16.10.2011 12:03:32 | | Suspending file transfers - requested by operating system
16.10.2011 12:04:53 | | Windows is resuming operations
16.10.2011 12:04:54 | | Resuming computation
16.10.2011 12:04:54 | | Resuming file transfers

I'm using Boinc 6.12.33 running on Windows Vista Ultimate 32
desktop computer running 24/7 with no restriction.

I looked in older logs and going back to May this year this has never been logged before.

What can be causing the operating system to suspend computation although it’s only for a very short period of time?

Re: undocumented suspend situation?

Hello jgis,
I do not know what would cause Windows to suspend BOINC rather than just supersede it with a higher priority thread, but there are many conditions in the BOINC profile that will cause BOINC to suspend operations. Which is why I have changed my profile to run BOINC unless non-BOINC processes are using 90% of core capacity rather than just the default 25%. There are a number of default choices like that which I have changed on my own computer.

Re: undocumented suspend situation?

BOINC was recoded with the arrival of Vista to shut down post haste, but controlled to prevent task corruption on resume.

Maybe it was an action of accidentally hitting the shutdown and then reversing the decision... for instance, the Windows auto-update initiates a boot cycle, but if watching it you can reverse that... caught Woz out a few times, waiting on a slow program to close... even this week, the patch week and presently have 8 patches waiting in WAU to be applied when i'm ready, that arrived yesterday, the 16th, Sunday of all days :D

If not reoccuring, I'd call it a fluke OS behavior to which BOINC responded. Whilst scanning the logs on me 6.12.33 client starting Aug.15, no such entries are to be found though. Question: Is BOINC installed at user level or in PAE (Protected Application Execution) aka service. Mine are as a service which probably closes last, beyond the stop boot point.

Re: undocumented suspend situation?

This is probably a fluke incident.

In my previous post I was refering to the Boinc event log. When looking into the windows event log I see that the computer has somehow a entered standby mode and sleeep mode at the same time !

in the the event log :

Windows has resumed from standby:
Standby Duration : 87693ms
Standby Incident Time (UTC) : 16.10.2011 12:03:32
Resume Duration : 6341ms
Resume Incident Time (UTC) : 16.10.2011 12:06:27
IsDegradation : true

another event (performance related):

The system has resumed from sleep.

Sleep Time: 16.10.2011 12:03:26
Wake Time: 16.10.2011 12:04:56

Wake Source: RTC
