I have been crunching on a desktop for a while now, but I just started running WCG on my laptop. I noticed that its fan runs constantly, with absolutely no breaks. Could this be bad for my machine if I let it run constantly? Here are my stats if they help:
Dell XPS L501X Intel i5 M560 dual core @ 2.67 GHz Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (SP1) 8 GB DDR2 RAM Nvidia GeForce GT 420M |

Hello Zargontapel,
Yes, you have to watch CPU temperatures on laptops. I suggest you find a utility that will let you monitor your CPU temperature. Options that will let you control your temperature: 1) TThrottle 2) run only 1 project at a time (default is 2 for a dual-core) 3) run only 50 % of the time (1 sec on / 1 sec off) - -default is run 60% ( 3 sec on / 2 sec off) In either case, with 8 GB, choose: 1) BOINC never suspended (This means leave it in memory even if higher-priority programs are running) 2) set Leave Application In Memory on (you have 8 GB!) I run my laptops at 50% to keep the fan noise and heat down. Also, periodically clean/air out the intake and exhaust fan areas.

Thanks for the advice, but what you said made me see that my client is actually running four processes simultaneously, as if I had four cores. Also, how and where would I change the option to keep it in memory? Sorry, but I'm a computer newb

I am very happy with TThrottle for more than an year now on both my Toshiba and Dell laptops. Just set the temp level which keeps the fan down and forget it - the program is doing all the rest. I even run CEP2 (1 WU per laptop) without overheat problems.

Hello Zargontapel,
Go to My Grid - Device Manager and look at (Selected Profile). I am using a named profile (Home) which I have edited rather than the Default profile that comes with a new BOINC installation. I changed some of the options to the way I wanted them, then I saved the changes with Custom Options and SAVE. Some of the options I didn't want to select at all - selecting 0 usually means Do Not Select. I am perfectly happy letting BOINC have 75-90% of my memory, etc. And make sure you set 'On multiprocessors, use: 50% of processors'. This will cut down the number of BOINC projects to 2. 25% will run just 1 BOINC project. This will reduce the heat. Also set 'Leave Application in Memory' to Yes. BOINC projects will be swapped out to Virtual Memory if you are running another program but you will not lose any computations unless you reboot which will cause BOINC to restart from the last checkpoint. Use 1 profile for desktops and another for laptops. I would use Home and Work respectively. I have Home set to Maximum Output. Lawrence |
