Hello,
----------------------------------------I'm new to the grid. I installed the BOINC agent just today and I'm experiencing a problem that prevents me from actually using it. Here are my OS information: Ubuntu 11.04 Kernel 2.6.38-11-generic GCC version 4.5.2 (x86_64-linux-gnu) When I run the GUI it starts to detect the current state and then it immediately returns error (without further information). When I run the BOINC app in terminal it returns this: tom@tom-GA-880GA-UD3H:~$ boinc I should also note that I installed the agent from native ubuntu repositaries through this command: sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager I would be really thankful for any ideas on how to solve the problem. Well, I've spent several hours on google trying to find a solution. Installing and uninstalling the app again and again when all it took was to reboot the computer! Now everything works just fine :)
I haven't found this piece of advice anywhere so I'll leave it here. |

Hi,
----------------------------------------Curious...did you get the installation from Synaptic Package Manager or by installing with the Berkeley .sh kit? The Synaptic package integrates much better and, you can guess what's coming, not had a single issue with respect to this. Never have failing connection of the BM with the Core client. --//-- edit: Booting... the very first time a 6.2 or higher version of BOINC is installed it's a requirement to get the special boinc limited rights accounts active. The Windows install actually tells the user to do so (still, not all do). For Linux I suspect logging out and in would suffice. At any rate, thanks for sharing that experience. Hi, I installed it via terminal and I guess it's the same as using synaptic ;)

Yes, sudo apt-get install boincxxxx boinc does the same. Note that Synaptic showed 3 parts to install, so you might wanna fire up the GUI and filter for BOINC and check all are marked as installed. Usually when done on the Linux cruncher I stop the gui service [gdm/kdm or whatever is used) and also kill beam.smp to max cycles for crunching.

I looked it up in synaptic and i found out that i have only two packages installed: boinc-manager and boinc-client. Others, that are not installed are:
boinc (metapackage) boinc-dev boinc-dbg boinc-app-seti boinc-app-milkyway But I don't think that I have to install those as my BOINC client runs just fine. Also i keep the manager shut down so there's no GUI that I know about open. And what is beam.smp? (I assume it's a process but what is its function?) Just curious. |

The boinc (metapackage) installs the other 2 IIRC. This and the client and manager are showing as installed per Synaptic. The rest is just project specific and debug and development.
beam.smp is a piece that's started when I get into the GUI, but does not get killed when stopping it and holds other fluff in memory such as couchdb. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1349104. Now when doing 'top -u me' there's like 4 processes left using not time, some root stuff and boinc of course. BOINC then shows > 99% efficiency, often > 99.5%, except for CEP2. That one has loads of disk I/O. --//-- |
