Milestones Today
----------------------------------------Burno passes 500,000 BOINC Total Credit Which is quite a feat considering he has a water cooled wind-up PC.

RCC,
Well it is not exactly a wind-up water cooled PC any more. I replaced the water cooler after about the third time it started to over heat due to lack of water, yet I never could find a leak. I put in a Nuctua air cooled heat sink, it works great. It keeps a nice constant temp around 30 degrees C. and it runs 24/7. But then my 14 year old PC that I was using for E-mail and web surfing died. So I pressed the wind-up Windows XP PC into e-mail duty, magic jack duty, web duty, and BOINC duty, in its spare time. So being almost a complete PC moron, I had enough of trying to fight viruses and worms, and trojans, and who knows what else just to keep the thing running. So I brought a new MAC mini. After several months of trying to figure out how to turn it on, I finally got it workingâ¦lol. Nah... not really, it was actually surprisingly easy. As a matter of fact it did everything itself, from finding the internet, setting up e-mail, everything. I couldnât have been happier. It has a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3 ram, and a 1.12 TB Fusion Drive, which is a 128 GB SSD, with the remaining GBs in a standard HD configuration. It is now doing the majority of the BOINC work, with the wind-up PC doing a wee bit when it can. The MAC is small, quiet and very fast. Everything I need fits right on my desk top, my actual physical desk top. It has a wireless keyboard, wireless mouse, no more wire âbird nestâ behind and under the desk. It handles all my photos and home movies and dozen of other things. I guess you could say I love it. Of course I did buy one book, âSwitching to MAC - the missing manualâ, a great buy for all morons. |

Burno,
----------------------------------------I have a Noctua in my i7, it is running with one fan, can't fit the middle fan because there is no clearance with the case fan above it. The Noctua takes up about 20% of the real estate inside the case. The side panel has a spot for two additional fans but can't do the upper fan because the Noctua almost touches the panel. The FX-8350 I recently built is starting to run a little hot due to August in Georgia. I like to live on the edge so it is running the stock cooler. Might try a Noctua in that one too. I have a Windows XP PC, single core at 2.4GHz, it averages about 4 WUs a day. The closest thing I have to wind-up. Slow but dependable. Now that you have an i7 you should be able to do 100+ WUs a day. Give or take 100. When I worked at Bellcore the staff and the hired hands (developers) were very fond of MAC. You couldn't pry them out of their hands, mostly because they were easy to use and did things Windows couldn't imagine. Since I lacked imagination Windows was fine for what I did, which was primarily Microsoft Office. Funny thing, when i walked into any programmers office the screens (looked like games) would change quickly and they would be hard at work. Is that "I'm not playing a game--I'm hard at work" a built-in feature in MAC?

RCC,
No, "I'm hard at work" is not built in, its an old App. I also found it to be available on my PC at BellSouth and Nortel. Grumpy can vouch for that, I believe he also had it on his PC. |

I've never been accused of working too hard. How do these rumors get started, anyway? ![]() |

If I may inquire, what mobo is the FX-8350 sitting on? ASUS M5A78L-M USB3nap The case presently has 2 intake and 3 exhaust 120mm fans. I plan to add 2 more intake fans with filters. It has a fan controller panel with temperature sensors that will control 4 pairs of fans. The CPU fan and the case exhaust fan behind the CPU are controlled by the motherboard. Above the CPU are 2 exhaust fans, the front panel has 2 intake fans. The 2 additional intake fans will be on the left side panel opposite the CPU. The above fan configuration is identical to my i7, which is about 60C under full load. The problem with AMD is that they don't specify safe temperatures and unlike the Intel CPUs you can kill an AMD CPU. The FX-8350 is running 50C-56C with 50% load. The max safe temperature of the FX-8350 may be 61C according to what I have read.

I'm not playing a game--I'm hard at work Present company excluded.I've never been accused of working too hard. How do these rumors get started, anyway? ![]() You are a hard worker. But I am referring to those that aren't. It is not the actual state of working too hard, it is the illusion. When perfected the illusion cannot be distinguished from reality. Many have perfected it.
