Re: Lots of errors

Let me share my suspicion: There's a file that gets send ahead that holds a table of seeds [filters], same as to what NRW did. When a new C4CW task is requested, the servers tell which seed to pick, so there does not have to be a download. When all seeds are done and the next group is being computed, a new filter file is send... which is where things on the CRC checking fail.

Mind you, not following why this happens to some, not all. My quad Linux and W7 duo do a dozen a day, so it should be fetching a new filter file too every now and then. Not suffering yet [feet solidly parked on wooden table).

Possible fix, if it is a permission related issue [very much not thinking it is]: Run a BOINC install repair.

Re: Lots of errors

Hi,

just an update: the machines that generated lots of errors returned to normal behavior, without actions from my side.

One was restarted, of course, but the other one no: yesterday delivered all errors, today all valid results.

Thanks

Re: Lots of errors

I copy the file onto my two machines before I read SekeRob’s post. Obviously he thought it through much better than me because I did not think of copying it in the same bit size. Luckily I copied the windows 32 bit file onto a one windows 32bit and one windows 64 bit computers. I was lucky that I did not have the 64 bit file.

Anyway the windows 7 32 bit machine has finished 4 units and they are all shown as valid and the windows 7 64 bit machine has completed 3 units also shown as valid.

When the project is again sending out files correct I can delete the file on the 64 bit machine and should be able to download the correct 64 bit version.

Re: Lots of errors

I just tested downloads from all three of the caching servers for both compressed and uncompressed transfers. All yielded the same md5sum. I also detached and reattached to WCG. We are distributing the proper file.

We need more information to understand what is happening on your machine:

Was the transfer of the file interrupted part way through the transfer and did it attempt to resume?

Are you going through a proxy?

Can you create a cc_config.xml file (it should be found in the BOINC data directory) with the following additional flags:

<cc_config>
<log_flags>
<http_debug>1</http_debug>
<http_xfer_debug>1</http_xfer_debug>
</log_flags>
</cc_config>

thanks,
Kevin

Re: Lots of errors

Thanks, Kevin, for looking into this problem.

In my case the file transfer was NOT interrupted, and I’m not going through a proxy. I have added the debug log flag you suggested, and I’ll report back as soon as I’ve got anything.

Re: Lots of errors

That is very odd. All the headers are correct and no errors are reported during the data transfer. Unfortunately, the uncompressed size is 3153468 instead of the proper 12642142. The compressed size that is actually transferred is 781996 (based on server logs) and that shows up in the response headers.

I checked the server logs in question and there is only one request that did not send the 781996 response size. That was for the rest of the file in a interrupted transfer. I'm going to have to think about what could be happening here.

Have you done anything unusual with your installation or your system?

Re: Lots of errors

No this system was the one that was working with C4CW, the one I took the file off to try on the other computers. I just deleted c4cw.target04.water-filled-filtered
from the WCG boinc data directory to be able to attempt a download and get a copy of the logs.

Re: Lots of errors

Can you do something unusual for me?

I want you to change the DNS for the download server on your computer from our cloud caching server to our 'origin' download servers. This will let us bypass the caching servers and go straight to the main servers. Here is what you need to do:

Open the file at:

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

At the end of the file on its own line, add:

198.20.8.241 download.worldcommunitygrid.org

Then save the file (you will need administrator rights to make this change).

This will change the IP address that is used on the system to resolve the download so that it goes to our primary servers.

Once you do that, please recreate the issue with all logging flags enabled.

I am assuming you are using the same server that you tried before. The instructions are different for other OS's.

thanks for trying this.

Re: Lots of errors

Well done Kevin, I followed your instructions and it worked. Do you need to see the log as I recieve this error if I try posting the log Error executing SQL in PostDAOImplJDBC.create.
