Re: New Beta Starting 2011/07/22

anhhai,

Right now there are 72 calculations that happen in the workunits. The future ones will have only 8. The time between checkpoints will be about 10 times larger. So we will have more work units to run but hopefully keep the runtime around 6 hours.

coolstream,

Good luck with your ISP.

Thanks,
-Uplinger

Re: New Beta Starting 2011/07/22

I have also observed what hera and sek reported.

Just for clarification for the tech's: In the boinc manager advanced screen->under the tasks tab->the column labeled "Progress" which shows the percentage complete of the WU, will sometimes change from whatever % complete to -100% (negative 100%) and then progress forward again from the last point a few seconds later.

I'm guessing that it is simply doing a re-calc of the progress when the screen updates and then fills in the new value on the next screen refresh.

Not a big deal...the WU's progress along fine, but I can see how that progress indication could cause some alarm.

//edit//: spelling

This is quite strange, but I have also seen this problem

Re: New Beta Starting 2011/07/22

I have received 2x Beta Beta ampc and 1x Beta Beta tk between 17.00 and 20.00 - spread one on each W7 PC - the rest of the PC's getting nothing (they had earlier beta WU's) - is this deliberate policy, one per machine? None are being processed at present and I guess that at least 2 WU's will be done and sent back by the time I get to see the machines in the morning....

Re: New Beta Starting 2011/07/22

The first 2 resends I got were because of 'No Reply' originally sent on 22nd of July.
Wingmen ran version 6.11 and in PV-state. I'm running Beta Test 6.12. 4 hours to go before we'll know, whether they will be valid or not.

I returned those 2 and both were valid as well as the waiting ones belonging to the wingmen crunched with Beta Test v6.11.

I must say, I'm not particularly happy about this. I hope this is just a beta thing and that the definitive WUs won't have so few checkpoints. Not that I'm angry about it, just that I prefer, IF POSSIBLE, many checkpoints.

Right now I have three of the hsp90 variety, each on a different PC. So far they look fine.

Re: New Beta Starting 2011/07/22

Returned 4 already around the 3 1/2 hrs as others said, they are PV now. One is waiting for a manual bump up in a machine not with me now...

I also would prefer many checkpoints, but the main thing for me is low internet usage and vast availability of WUs, not to have another DDDT2 to micromanage (I said it! - sorry).

Re: New Beta Starting 2011/07/22

coolstream,

Good luck with your ISP.

Thanks,
-Uplinger

Thanks, uplinger. I did a test and chanced one set of results to uploading via the mobile network. Results were sent very quickly and once validated, I will report back whether it was worth trying.

As for the other betas (I grabbed 31 in all), the final two will have completed in the next 13 minutes. The ISP outage has been repaired and all of the others have been successfully uploaded.

With regards to longer checkpoints, I am not bothered because my machines run 24/7 and are almost 100% dedicated to WCG number crunching. BoincTasks is telling me that my final beta BETA_BETA_tk_0000000_0298_0 has so far completed 70 checkpoints for a project that has run for just over 5 hours with an estimated 6 minutes to go before completion. This doesn't seem too excessive when compared to HCC. The only time I would really be worried about 10x larger checkpoints is if a machine had to be restarted for updates to OS or Firewall and it were running *several* of these WUs some near the end of a checkpoint and some at the beginning.

ADDENDUM
All betas are now completed. Did it really take me 6 minutes to type one paragraph? worried

ADDITIONAL COMMENT:
On reflection, I would like to add that longer checkpoints running over several cores could result in there never being an optimal window of opportunity to allow a machine to be restarted for housekeeping purposes. I think that the trouble will come if the proposed lengthening of checkpoint times gets in the way of allowing vital updates to the machine to be carried out.

I trust that the proposed change to checkpoint times will not become too obtrusive.

Re: New Beta Starting 2011/07/22

I, for one, like to see checkpoints no further apart than 10 to 30 minutes if at all possible.

1 of 2 Betas complete and in PV.
