Re: UK

In other news, still no joy getting my "non-crunching" server rebuilt - it's being somewhat awkward, and not wanting to be back up and running again, it seems! sad

Hmm so what's the plan? Sweet talk and honeyed words or the "persuader"? wink

Re: UK

Well, the first "issue" was the RAID-card not actually supporting SATA-3 drives, despite a few claims to the contrary found elsewhere...

I've also tried plugging the new drives straight into the motherboard, using software-RAID again (which does detect the drives), and it's then failing each time on trying to install the bootloader into the Master Boot Record (MBR), which means the operating system is pretty much installed but not bootable (which makes it not too useful).

Going to try an older version of debian, tonight, the original version I installed on the server when I first built it.

If that doesn't go on, then the next slightly-more-drastic step will be to remove the graphics card, use onboard graphics from now on, and install a new SATA-3-supported RAID-card (which I'll need to hope the vendor will swap my currently newly-purchased RAID-card out for) into the PCi-E (x16) slot the graphics card was using...

If that still doesn't work, I'm kind of out of ideas, apart from buying a new motherboard/CPU/RAM (which I'd prefer not to do).

@Thargor, seriously sorry to hear the trouble your having sad , can only hope it gets sorted soon and with the minimal of fuss (it's not nice when systems throw their dummies out of the pram crying ).

Re: UK

I've added two older workstations today that will run when idle only, but as the usual users are on holiday this week, they will run idle for a few days as I left them on!

Re: UK

Well, the server is finally back up and running, albeit in a very sub-optimal condition - I had to get rid of RAID completely, so it's set up with the install on one of the 2TB drives, and the other two 2TB drives set up as /spare1 and /spare2.

Ahh well, it'll do for now, until I look at getting the replacement RAID-card......at least it's back up and running, although I still have no idea why it wouldn't install with any type of RAID-configuration.
