Thanks for the comments/tips. After some trial and error I reached the conclusion that lots of smaller files is the way forward. My biggest issue now is dealing with User names containing diacritical marks e.g. Horváth András which don't convert well, Unix to Excel.

ARRRR! What a crazy day I've had with crunching.

I'd decided to to get a small crunching rig and the parts came today, great you might think. But...

I move my current desktop to another room, <1m the other side of a wall. But horror when I tried to turn it back on to find nothing... no bios posting, no nothing!!!! +

After thorough testing I still had no idea what was going on and the error display displaying nothing wasn't helping me out much . So with the power of a 5 year old eeepc laptop I ascended the Google information highways. I found two posts of people with similar problems and they both fixed it with new PSUs. Lucky for me my new parts have arrived so i unpacked my shiny 630W PSU, tested it, BAM! Fixed, but sad times my first ever piece of hardware is dead or at least unusable despite its ability to spin up system fans, who knew a PSU could be half dead, alas my first purchased PSU (I think maybe 4 years of age with 6 months solid crunching didn't help) is destined for the bin. But now I'm left with a rig with no PSU which I cant use until another new one arrives... *dramatic sigh*

I did briefly use a Scythe "Gentle Typhoon" 5400rpm fan on my gaming PC's CPU, until I realised I could hear it through two closed doors in the flat. It's now sat as a spare, just in case anything fails.

I wasn't expecting quietness, to be honest, given that it pushes out 150 cubic-feet of air per minute at 50.5dB!
