Re: UK

So, my laptop installed updates and restarted last night and was sat on the login screen.
This means 7 hours of lost processing time, can GRID be started as a service when the computer starts, rather than on user logon?

Re: UK

I think you "can" do it with Windows (I'm assuming you're using Windows here), but I'd be more inclined to suggest disabling auto-reboot-on-updates, to be honest. Not sure how to go about setting something up as a service, but a quick Google finds the following (it's an old post as BOINC 7 is out now, I believe, but should still give the pointers needed):

My only Windows PC is also my gaming PC, and the last thing I want it to do is install a small update and then reboot (or even lose game-window focus) while I'm gaming...

My Linux boxes (mostly debian, one Ubuntu), on the other hand, will easily run services all day without me even logging in...

Re: UK

Useful, thanks :)

I'll disable the reboots at home, but at work the machines are part of a policy that will restart (so thats not an option).
I'll give it a go and see what comes of it :)

Re: UK

OK, the first of the new servers is in, but it's a crappy old dual-core Xeon - will be crunching, at least, but very slowly (estimates of the current two work-units below):

DSFL: 14 hours
CfCW: 9 hours

There's another one of those to get built, first thing in the morning (assuming I can get it to recognise its own RAID-controller and hence see its disks), then I can get started on building the other 10 considerably-faster servers!

Should do a fair bit of crunching! smile

Re: UK

On closer checking, the new server appears to have dual single-core Xeons in it. It's also had its first finished work-unit validated!

Hopefully, with just a few more things left to tweak, the other ten faster servers should be online before the end of today! smile

EDIT: had a few more config settings and installs to tweak, than I thought, so it's going to be Monday for the new cluster now!

Re: UK

I've just added a few extra workstations to my fleet. WCG will only run when idle but I expect to get a few extra points as they are 4 and 6 core xeons!

@ gordoma Impressive AllTime stats biggrin

14,030 (#10,546)

We'll be glad to have you join the UK team, as and when. Test lab or part-time Laptop, all crunching contributions are welcome. smile

Thanks Jonnieb-uk

It's amazing how quickly one gets back into the crunching mindset again - trying to get a good spread across all projects, tinkering with various settings, keeping a lookout for any "spare compute" I can dedicate to the cause.
