Re: Morning Update (2)

Good afternoon team,

I have just added another hex core (12 thread) workstation to the fleet. With the exception of a few workstations, the fleet will be rendering over the weekend, so I expect a boost in runtime for the team.

In desperate need of a project with results that only take a couple of hours to complete at the most for my idle only workstations now that HCC is finished. Any recommendations?

@ crooks_uk

SekeRob dashboard shows mean average runtimes but I think these are since a project began so I've added (in blue) the figure for the last 60 days:
	FAAH	8.09 5.86
HPF 7.13 5.14
HCC 1.91 0.64 CPU+GPU
CEP 7.10 7.55
DSFL 5.58 4.29
GFAM 5.57 4.18
SN2S 5.31 4.78

I recall there was a knreed post months ago saying that the techs are well aware of the need for 1 or 2 projects to have WUs with comparatively short Runtimes (I've tried to find the specific post without success). With the imminent end of HCC the server load will dramatically reduce so there will be the option for WU length (apart from CEP) to be reduced. I'll post the question in the forum and see what (if any) response there is. Posted here.

Random Factoid

Random Factoid #7
My gut feeling is that so long as our GPU crunchers (esp Soong) continue to grab their share of GPU WUs right to the bitter end, it won't be a problem.

Over the last 7 days Soong been responsible for 49.71% of the UK team's total Results (and possibly 59.65% of the team's HCC Results (assumes Soong project mix is 100% HCC)) cool cool

Re: Random Factoid

Unfortunately, despite adding a handful of new host-machines to the VM cluster my team is running in work, I've not been able to add any new VMs, as there's a fair bit of development work being carried out on the platform at the moment. Hopefully, it'll be short work, and the resources will be freed up soon! smile

I'm also waiting on a decision to be made on what's happening with our "staff co-location" facility - all staff currently get 2U of rack-space allocation and a single power-socket, within three cabinets in our build-lab part of the data-centre, to put a server of our own in. However, with about 120U of space in those cabinets, and a growing number of people saying they're interested in putting a server in, space and power-sockets are getting very short in supply.

Currently, there is a project-team looking to convert those who wish to over to another VM platform, leaving those who wish to remain with a physical server the remaining space in the current location - as far as I'm aware, so far, this space will be prioritised to those who use the least space and power.

The server I currently have running in the allocated space is an ancient (and very slow) 1U dual single-core Xeon which, if the project team say the physical servers can stay, I'll be looking to replace with a 1U 4-way hex-core (24 hyperthreaded cores in total for 48 concurrent WUs) node-server - this will likely be quite power-hungry, so I want to make sure that I'll be OK to use it in the data-centre before I splash out the not-exactly-a-small-amount-of-money on it.

The comments in work about spending this amount of money on a server like that, I've answered by saying it's going to be funded by a small part of my inheritance from my Nan's estate (who sadly passed away in January of this year), and she was always proud that I was putting effort into something like this, that's such a good cause - I'd rather put the money to use on something like WCG (where I know what it's going towards) instead of simply giving it to charity (and not knowing what happens to it after that).

@ Thargor
Thanks for sharing that with us. biggrin I think it goes without saying that we all understand the rationale behind your thinking, on the investment of your grandmother's legacy.

In other news:
The P/V gaoler is extracting his pound of flesh and left me 0.28hrs short of Emerald HCC following the overnight update! Grr!

End of HCC

Some 60 hours after knreed posted:
We have just finished distributing the last of the new work for the Help Conquer Cancer project.

the overnight update has the first definite signs of work beginning to tail off!

Initial indications are that the UK team held up well smile
[edit] In comparison to other teams.

I'll post more details as I process the data. wink

Re: Morning Update

Hmm I think I'll have to revise the parameters that insert the sick & crying etc in the Morning Update, to reflect the new reality post HCC GPU crunching. It'll take a few days decide the new boundaries. wink
