I just down graded back to ubuntu 10.4. Seems everything going good. Today, manually turned on network activity to run based on preferences. It switched to this and discontinue network activity over and over like it was in a loop or something. Had to exit boinc and turn back on to get control. Never seen this before. Probably some hiccup. Anyone see anything like this? Am using boinc 6.10.17.

I just recently joined grid computing, and so haven't had that problem.
----------------------------------------One of my computers has Linux (Ubuntu 10.10), and I just wondered why you still have Boinc 6.10#17 ? It is also recently that I upgraded Ubuntu to 10-10, then the Synaptic Downloader found a packaged installation after searching for "Boinc" which smoothly added Boinc 6.10#58 to my Linux instantly. ![]() |

Hi Bearcat,
----------------------------------------I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 and BOINC 6.10.17 on 4 machines for quite a while and have not had any issues with switching network activity. However, I only change that setting manually on one machine. On that machine I go back and forth pretty often between "Network activity always available" and "Network activity suspended." I haven't ever had a problem with those changes. z2000, welcome to WCG! BOINC 6.10.17 is what is in the Ubuntu 10.04 repository. So for those of us who are sticking with the "Long Term Support" version of Ubuntu, we get 6.10.17 when we follow the procedure that gets you 6.10.58 under Ubuntu 10.10. I am trying out Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 1 on one of my machines. BOINC 6.10.59 is in its repository. ![]() |

It's not just linux that does this, Bearcat.
I've had it happen with both linux and Windows, although it has been a year or more since the last time. I never had to exit boinc to make it stop, just had to click on Suspend network activity three or four times before it would stop switching. |

Hi Bearcat. How have you got your network preferences set, this is mine. edit// I'm using 10.04lts & 6.10.58 x64 from the getdeb ppa. Network Usage Confirm before connecting to Internet? NO Disconnect when done? NO Have this same settings on my computer. This just happened again while trying to add another project, climate prediction. This is so strange as never seen this before. I switched network settings to always and now it's going between this and network based on preferences. Does seem to help to click it a few times to make it stick, but will watch it to see what happens. Thought to downgrade ubuntu since I was having heat issues with 10.10. Has dropped 2 degrees and not much spiking with temps. Will do some checking on what the latest boinc is used for WCG. Thanks

I have found older Ubuntu builds perform better.
( I use 9.04 ) More stable , less bugs , more results faster... But you can still easily install the new 6.10.58 Hardy -- 8.04 Jaunty - 9.04 Karmic - 9.10 http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...ead,31030_offset,0#317438 Plus you can try the beta version if you feel brave. ![]() |

Think I figured it out. Looks like I had a second window open of boinc when this happened this morning. Possibly a conflict with the 1st window. Will monitor again tomorrow when I do my upload, but insure only 1 window of boinc is open. Still trying to figure out how the second window opened. That's for all the replies.

I have two machines running Linux and I have seen this happen a couple of times. It appeared to be entirely random. I am running Linux Mint 7 which is an old version, and a variant of Ubuntu, but I do not know which one. The only fix I could figure out was to do a restart. These two machines run 24/7 but I only connect them to the internet about every 4 days, so on the days and times they do get connected I resume network activity. After all of the uploads and downloads are complete I suspend network activity prior to disconnecting my broadband modem. I have no clue on the cause.
----------------------------------------I have opened two windows by mistake because to open the BOINC window in Linux is a single mouse click, not a double mouse click as in Windows. I don't recall the flip flopping problem being associated with the double window problem, but now that you mention it I will pay closer attention should the problem recur. Cheers
