Connecting to other computers on the bonic manager

When I try connecting to other computers (using Advanced -> Select Computer) using the names that are provided on my member profile statistics Ex."Work-PC" ect. Everything goes blank and it shows "disconnected in the lower right hand corner where as it usually says connected to local host 6.10.58 in the lower right hand corner of the manager.

So I have to go to task manager and usually kill it since it won't exit when I do this.

Also I usually leave the password field blank. What is the password, is it my membership password or some other password I set? Because I didn't set a password other than my membership one to the site/project.

So

1. Do I need to use IP addresses or just the name that's given on your device statistics page? (some computers are inside a domain/network so I'd assume I'd need to use the full dns/domain name if I'm connecting through the internet).

2. What is the password field?

Re: Connecting to other computers on the bonic manager

2. What is the password field?

The password is located in the BOINC data-directory, in a file called gui_rpc_auth.cfg, and if you've not manually set the password a randomly-generated password created on the 1st. run of BOINC-client is present. BOINC won't allow you to use a blank password.

To remotely control BOINC, you'll normally change gui_rpc_auth.cfg to an easily-for-you-to-remember password, and copy this file to all computers you'll want to remotely control.

But, just knowing the password isn't enough to remotely control BOINC. The easiest and most secure method to do this is to make a file called remote_hosts.cfg, and this file should also be located in the BOINC data-directory, and after making this file copy it to all computers you'll want to remotely control.

remote_hosts.cfg should contain one or more lines, and on each line include either a host-name or an ip-address to a computer you wants to use to remotely control other computers.

So, if example you'll have computers named nr_001, nr_002, nr_003 and so on, and you want to use only nr_001 to control, remote_hosts.cfg will contain a single line with

nr_001

After making/editing remote_hosts.cfg and gui_rpc_auth.cfg, you'll always need to re-start BOINC-client for BOINC to start using the new info.
