I have been running a 1055T since last may at 3.7 and have never had any problems. It runs 6 projects with no problem. Seems to have no memory issues, at least under Linux.
Can't say much about the stock fan since I have never used one. I have not had any heat issues with mine. I think it's a great cost effective system. |

AMD is expected to release an 8 core (16 thread, I think) Bulldozer on June 20th 2011. It is anticipated that it will outperform the previous generation by around 50% at the same freq.
I would wait until then before buying an AMD CPU. Even if you don't get a Bulldozer the prices of their other CPU's should fall. Intel's prices will probably fall around that time too, including some of their Sandy Bridge line up (now supported by fixed motherboards). |

Thanks for that. My current computer runs fine and I was planning on building a new rig in a few months. I may now wait until the bulldozer comes out and the effect that has on prices.
In the meantime, would this works. I currently run an ASUS M3a78-Vm motherboard with a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5050e cpu. I was checking the stats of my motherboard and surpised to see that I can put the Phenom IIX6 1090T(HDT90ZFBK6DGR) SocketAM3,6-Core chip in it. http://www.asus.com/Product.aspx?P_ID=kEbQGBW...mp;content=specifications However, the chip for sale is the black edition with the code HDT90ZFBGRBOX. Will this still work? If so, then I will put this in my PC and not need to upgrade for longer time. Maybe just some more memory as I only have 2gb at the moment. If I went to 4gb, would this help. I am running XP at the moment. |

Socket AM3 processors can be used on Socket AM2+ motherboards, but not the other way round.
----------------------------------------The CPU support list confirms it can support the X6 CPU, but you might need to update your Bios (before you install the PhenomIIX6 processor and while you have the existing CPU), and you should check that your PSU is up to the job (just in case it's a 2year old 300W unbranded one): Your board supports CPU's with up to 140W TDP and 45nm Phenom II CPU's. It supports these CPU's, Phenom IIX6 1035T(HDT35TWFK6DGR),2.6GHz,95W,rev.E0,SocketAM3,6-Core Bios 2201 Phenom IIX6 1055T(HDT55TFBK6DGR),2.8GHz,125W,rev.E0,SocketAM3,6-Core Bios 2201 Phenom IIX6 1055T(HDT55TWFK6DGR),2.8GHz,95W,rev.E0,SocketAM3,6-Core Bios 2201 Phenom IIX6 1090T(HDT90ZFBK6DGR),3.2GHz,125W,rev.E0,SocketAM3,6-Core Bios 2201 PS. Get the extra RAM ;) [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Mar 9, 2011 11:47:10 PM] |

Thank you so much for that clarification.
I always feel like a little child playing with the big boys when I read these forums but people like you and Sekerob are always helping people like me out even though our knowledge is vastly inferior to yours. I would just like to say thanks for helping us out and giving me the confidence to do things like this. I have a 500W Antec PSU running no cards, 2 x 1gb Ram, 2 DVD burners (used seldomly) and 3 SATA HDDs (set to switch off after 3 mins of inactivity). Will I be ok? |

Yes 500W is plenty, and Antec don't make poor PSU's - it's a good one.

Saw an article today on a new AMD CPU, 32 nm... Bobcat. One member will be pleased with that identifier. http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/AMD-E300-and-E450/
When to buy? Soon as you do there will be something better/faster :D --//-- |

Saw an article today on a new AMD CPU, 32 nm... Bobcat. One member will be pleased with that identifier. http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/AMD-E300-and-E450/ --//-- Yesterday I received my small laptop with the AMD Bobcat chip called AMD 350 or Zacate. These chips combine a dual-core CPU and a discrete AMD GPU on a single chip, which draws only 18 watts. These low-end Bobcat chips are supposed to compete with Intel Atom. Although the CPU isn't faster than an Atom, the overall feel is way faster because the graphics are so much faster. I can't resist trying BOINC on every machine in sight, so at the moment the little guy is crunching 2 HFCC WUs on the CPU and a Collatz WU on the GPU. My laptop (Hewlett Packard dm1z) came with Windows 7 Home Premium; I haven't had time to put Ubuntu on it yet. ![]() |

How many Watts is the system using? Were you asking about the AMD Bobcat netbook? Just plugged it into my KillaWatt to take a look. I briefly kicked it up to 100% CPU usage for BOINC. With 2 CPU tasks and a GPU task running at 100% and the screen display on, it drew 21.5 watts. Now that I put it back down to 60% CPU usage (which is where I keep my laptops) and the screen has blanked, it's bouncing between 13.5 and 17.5 watts. (Good thing my AMD quadcore wasn't running any CEP2 units just now or I wouldn't have had the heart to shut it down and unplug it from the KillaWatt so as to check the new laptop. )![]() |
