Hi,
Its been a while since I contributed but as I just bought a nice new PC with lots of capacity I thought I would get involved again. I notice that on my Intel i7 processor which reports 8 CPU's Boinc decided to run 8 processes. I have noticed that this does effect the user interaction a little more that I like. Is there a way of telling boinc a max number of processes specifically rather than the %age use parameters. I would like to try dropping the process count to 5 or 6 if possible to see if it becomes less intrusive. Thanks. |

In the GUI client, it's in the Advanced View under
Advanced > Preferences > Processor usage > "on multiprocessor systems, use at most X% of the processors". The "% of processors" is rounded down, so e.g. 90% gives 7 processes, 75% gives 6 processes etc. There's a similar setting under My Grid > Device Manager > Device Profiles on this website, just select a profile and click "custom profile". |

RiggsFolly, in boinc folder, create file cc_config.xml
----------------------------------------and put there <cc_config> <log_flags> </log_flags> <options> <ncpus>7</ncpus> </options> </cc_config> or any other number then in menu Advanced -> Read config file ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by rilian at Feb 26, 2011 7:17:29 AM] |

That <ncpus> option works but is there for TESTING purposes, not for the not-hands-on crunchers. The control has also changed in functionality... it used to be 0 to allow use of all cores, but newer clients require -1 as value in that case.
Users best control cores allowed through the web device profile or local preferences, changing the percentage. --//-- |

Thanks waitingForAMiracle. That worked a treat.
----------------------------------------Changed to 50% and all work stopped, ran a banchmark and then restarted only 4 processes, brilliant, just what it said on the box. I will see if that gets communicated back to my online device profile or wether that over writed my changes. Ill report that back. Just in case this is any use to other inquisitive users. Thanks again all. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 26, 2011 3:41:06 PM] |

Website and Local prefs are stored separately in the BOINC data_dir, there being no writing of local prefs to website stored prefs. Soon as a single local pref is entered through the client interface, which is initially a copy / edit of the website prefs, they will stay in effect as override on that client until local prefs are cleared... there's a button to do that in the client GUI.
Website prefs > stored in global_prefs.xml Local prefs > stored in global_prefs_override.xml Local prefs do not include key controls such science selections and resource shares. They have to be managed via the website device profiles and My Projects. --//-- |
