I have noticed in the Preferences of the BOINC 6.10.58 client there is an item that says "Do work only after computer has been idle for ? minutes," but if I clear the number in the blank and then save I get a message, "Validation Error invalid float."
----------------------------------------From reading the FAQs I get the impression that if I have set "computing is allowed while computer is in use" then it ignores the "Do work only after computer has been idle for ? minutes." Do I understand correctly? If yes, then I suggest that it grey the field out; if not, then how do I clear the number in the minutes field so that the computer will run regardless of whether the computer is idle or not? On my copies of BOINC to include 6.10.58, the field is greyed indeed when the "while computer is in use" is ticked. Where you get "invalid float" the value 0.00 can be entered.

Now if it is supposed to be greyed out and mine is not, that makes me wonder whether the computer is ignoring the fact that "while computer is in use" is ticked?
----------------------------------------And also, I have a new question: I see a new setting that suppresses BOINC if CPU usage on non-BOINC applications is greater than a certain percent. It defaults to 25%; is there a particular reason for this? To conserve energy? To keep people's computers from overheating? Is there some particular setting you would recommend other than the default? (I changed it to 50% on my Macintosh.) Thanks! [Edit 1 times, last edit by jonathandl at Feb 25, 2011 4:28:03 PM] |

Maybe your client is already set to "Run always" in the Activity menu? Tested on 6.10.58 and 6.12 alpha and both grey the minutes field, but if the the "while in use" is ticked, it should just run, unless you have no permission to change anything.
If you have selected "Run based on preferences" in the Activity menu, the 25% will pause the client if non-BOINC use of the CPU exceeds that amount. WCG default is actually 50%, but even at 75-90 percent you're still good to go in the farthest majority of cases. Just enter zero to disable that function... it was made for those that no matter what, they'd find their computer not responding quick enough during tick-tack-toe. There's an FAQ for this too. --//-- |
