I have an old G4 iMac in the closet that I would like to throw at the fightaids@home project, but would something so old even finish processing by the deadlines?

Well, there's one way to find out - give it a whirl

But, but, it's over there and I'm over here. I can't reach it!

No idea about FAAH, but I've recently had to shut down 3 old 300Mc/s P3s still crunching HCMD2 - and a pair of P4s.
Sadly, I can no longer afford the electrickery. |

I have a G4 1.5ghz and FAAH takes anywhere from 14-23 hours per work unit. HCC takes around 5-6 hours. Good luck with your decision.

My G4 (1.2G) needed up to 55 hours for the largest FAAH work units — but the deadlines did not bother us.

The longer a task runs due to the lesser speed of a device, the more interesting it becomes to familiarize oneself with the checkpointing when the time is there to switch the machine off [full shutdown] or boot. 15 minutes between checkpoints on my quad 2.4 Ghz could be hours on such a G4. 700Mmhz. All about Minimizing Progress Loss you find in the FAQs, item 1-L http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=21501 on the index.

Any long task failures would become very noticeable. I would not crunch with a 700MHz system because the return for the cost of electric would be very poor (performance per Watt). HCMD2 would be the best project to run, should you decide to crunch with it; fixed maximum time (around 7h), low system requirements (64 MB RAM, 50 MB disk space), and the least bandwidth requirements (per task).

I kinda disagree with skgiven on the cost issue. If you already have a device and can afford to put it to use, then it is worth using. If you are an individual that is obsessed with cost/watt/wu, then obviously spending several hundred dollars on top notch hardware will give you more bang for your buck over the long run. I prefer to use what I have and make due with upgrades as I can afford to. I wouldn't for example save the $20 each month it would cost to run the old system and put it into an account until I can purchase the parts for a new energy efficient system.
----------------------------------------Edit: And I have systems from quads all the way down to a 266MHz currently crunching on WCG and other projects. They may not put out a lot of points, but like others will say, every little bit counts. Edit2: And, as long as the system can run the WU's, they are worth as much as any other system for new badges. Sometimes they are worth more like in the case of BETA units. Because they will run longer. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Coleslaw at Feb 7, 2011 9:27:08 PM] |

HCMD2 would be the best project to run, should you decide to crunch with it; fixed maximum time (around 7h) I don't believe that this is true - as I was of the understanding that the lower level is fixed at 6 Hrs, and then if the WU has passed 60% it's allowed to continue - right through to an upper maximum of 12 Hrs. ![]() |
