Hello DALERUTSCHOW,
Did you right-click on the installation program and select "Run as Administrator"? Normal;ly the user who has administrator rights does not run programs with administrator rights active. That would be a disaster if he accidentally clicked on malware in a web page. Instead, he has the right to activate his potential administrator authority. That is much safer. Try uninstalling, then reinstalling running as administrator. ![]() Lawrence |

No, so i removed it, saved it to disk and ran it as Administrator and samething. I left Norton on and looked at the log. It says that Boinc is attempting to access the network, no action taken...
I give upm anyway i can get the old version back ;-) dale |

With BOINC Manager running and showing "connecting to localhost", open a CMD window (DOS prompt) and enter the following:
----------------------------------------tasklist /fi "imagename eq boinc*" The output should be boinc.exe, boincmgr.exe, and boinctray.exe if everything started properly. If you are missing any of those, let us know. [Edit 1 times, last edit by BobCat13 at Nov 14, 2010 11:20:41 PM] |

boinctray.exe should be running, I'm not sure why it isn't, but I was expecting boinc.exe to not be running. The purpose of boinctray is to monitor keyboard and mouse activity and notify the boinc client when to suspend computations if the user has those options set. It should not be important to getting the Manager and client communicating with each other.
----------------------------------------Ok, if boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe are both running then you should be able to connect the Manager to the client unless something like security software is blocking the connection. In the Manager, using the Advanced view, choose Advanced then Select computer. On the popup box, type localhost into the host name box and the password should automatically fill in. If it doesn't fill in, we will try something else. This is the something else: Exit the BOINC Manager and boinc.exe if necessary. When you installed, if you didn't change any options during the install, your data directory should be at c:\ProgramData\boinc. This directory may be hidden so you will have to make it visible so you can work with it. Find a file called gui_rpc_auth.cfg and open it with notepad. Change the password to something easy for you to remember and save it. Now start BOINC Manager again, choose Advanced, Select computer, type 127.0.0.1 into the host name and the password into password box and hit enter/click OK. Does this connect to the localhost client? [Edit 1 times, last edit by BobCat13 at Nov 15, 2010 3:02:56 AM] |

Ok, I tried it, can't connect. Shutdown BOINC, Edited the file with a new password, copied it to make certain... Restated BOINC, put in 127.0.0.1 and the new password. Tries several times and a window pops up saying it can't, try again, hit YES, repeats... Checked Nortan, says BOINC is trying, but takes no action (i have it set to allow anything from this...)
What now? thanks, dale |

Vista firewall?
When I was running Vista, I had to create exceptions for boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe in the Vista firewall even though I had the firewall disabled. |
