Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

We had our monthly phone conference with the IBM/WCG team today and everything seems to be going well (except for the overall low return rates, but this is apparently not a CEP specific problem but observed throughout WCG). Crunching on then!

Our collaboration with Kitware is making some really nice progress. The Kitware team are currently using a chunk of the CEP data for their new MongoDB data model and they are developing additional tools for the data analysis and visualization. We’ll keep you posted on this.

Don't know about the rest of the world, but the shale gas "bonanza" here in the U.S. hasn't yielded the promised reduction in electricity prices.

Which is a shame at least in terms of my participation in WCG during the summer. Unlike in winter when I can replace my usage of natural gas with the waste heat resulting from cranking up the number of platforms running WCG projects flat-out, the increased ambient temperatures require me to both reduce the number of platforms dedicated to WCG and cool the air to prevent any unmanaged experiments in determining the thermal breakdown envelopes of a broad range of electronic components.

All of which leaves me frustrated...more platforms dedicated to CEP might yield positive results which might in turn yield me a power source that is immune to the private taxes levied by speculators and market manipulators which in turn would allow me to dedicate yet more platforms to WCG...

Human greed has become the anchor rather than the sail of the ship of human progress.

My rates have gone down in eastern Pennsylania in the last year. I am quite sure that it is due to the Marcellus shale gas, since they were originally projected to go up for several years. It is not just the actual gas in production yet, but also the identified supplies coming online, since some gas is bought on a futures basis like other commodities. I am sure the rest of the country will benefit eventually, once the other energy suppliers start feeling the heat (as it were).

Carolina has made some amazing progress on the database font-end and website. We can't wait to get it launched biggrin.

Testing and tinkering with different MySQL storage engines (MyISAM vs InnoDB) - just the right thing to do on a humid Saturday morning biggrin.

Suleyman just left for a longer trip to the Netherlands and Turkey where he will (amongst other things) make advertisement for CEP with several experimental groups over there. Good luck and safe travels!
