process got signal 11

On two of my crunchers since a few days all my c4cw tasks error out wit the "process got signal 11" message. This started after I upgraded to (X)ubuntu 10.10 (on 10-10-10). Before the upgrade they finished fine on one of them (an AMD Athlon 3200+ 64), the other (an AMD Athlon 1300 MHz 32) I just switched over from WinXP so I have no reference.
On my third, also upgraded to 10.10 (an Intel T6600 64), they all finish okay.

This means two of the computers I like to run c4cw on are now out of the running for this project. I didn't see any post of people getting the same error, so I fell pretty lonely in this crying

What could be causing this error and could it be solved?

Thanks,
Bart

hmm "I fell pretty lonely"... hope you did not hurt and lay there by yourself ;>)

signal 11 is covered in this thread https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...ead,29995_offset,0#297853 which leads to an FAQ. Something is bad and causing a Segment Violation.

When the consequence is I can't run c4cw on these crunchers it 'feels' like 'falling' ;)
But if we're going to pick on each other for typo's and grammar errors, it's " a FAQ", not "an FAQ" devilish
But you meant the BFS FAQ I suppose? That's all too geeky for me to understand.

But if this is a system problem, why did it occur only after upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10?
I'd hate to dump c4cw...

Re: process got signal 11

That there was a typo need not be said and was a way to a lighthearted opening and not being picky, but guess that got lost in translation.... never mind.

If the BFS FAQ is too geeky for you, down to earth, 10.10 is just cold out of the blocks, so don't ask why it would be failing C4CW now when it was fine on 10.04... did you install clean or did you use the "upgrade" function as OP suggests? Linux is gradually bloating, so who knows is the science app starting to hit areas in the hardware that previously were not reached. Run memtest86 for starters. It's in the Linux bootup menu by default (mine has). If that is not spitting out a problem contact someone who knows her/his way around Linux installations. My first experience with Linux was Ubuntu 10.04. There were more daily patches on this platform than I've ever seen on Windows doing it monthly.

PS: No idea in what Xubuntu differs from Ubuntu. BOINC and the sciences are in principle only tested on Ubuntu.

Re: process got signal 11

I understood the lightheartedness of it. I just wanted to be lighthearted back. No harm done, not even when I fell ;) Lost in communication, not translation...

But I did an update, no fresh install. I think I could have better done a fresh install, because the upgrade took ages... But the install is only a couple of weeks fresh, so it can't be that bloated...
I'll see if I can do a mem-test. I think I removed it from the grub.cfg, but I think I still have a backup of the file so I can paste that part back. Otherwise I'll try a fresh install in the next days and see if that helps.

And since I'm on Linux I wonder why so many Linux proponents always complain about the Windows updates. I've never seen so many updates coming in when I was on Windows. And all these kernel-updates... They say Linux can run weeks at a time, which I can do on Windows when I only let it crunch, but with the Kernel updates so far I've not yet been able to make that happen in Ubuntu.

Xubuntu is Ubuntu with Xfce in stead of Gnome. I can install every Gnome-dedicated app I like and the updates come from the Ubuntu repository. And Xfce has not much to do with the Linux-part of the OS, it's only the graphical top-layer, so I doubt it will affect the Wu's. The kernels are the same as in Ubuntu as far as I know. But as I already said I'm not very geeky, so I can't be sure.

Thanks,
Bart

I just did the mem-test, but no errors submerged. I'll try a fresh install in a while and see if that helps.

Thanks,
Bart

Since my devices (W7) are only crunching WCG and nothing else, I have switched off the Windows Update feature completely.
In this way there is no interference at all and no risk of having one machine stalled when I am away on travel and cannot attend. I do a mass manual W7 update of all my devices once in a while.
W7 is rock solid and I have machines running for weeks without a hitch. I never get BSD except when I experiment with crazy frequencies on RAM or CPU. smile

Re: process got signal 11

I agree with you. Win7 is a pretty darn* good OS as far as I'm concerned. But my XP cruncher could survive a couple of weeks as well. It depends what kind of Wu's I get. Some (alpha) seem to be buggy (memory-leaks?) and I need to reboot them more frequently, if it doesn't reboot itself...
I also always do manual updates. But on the computers I use daily I check for updates every day. I made the switch to Linux to crunch CEP2 and because I noticed most projects run faster on Linux. But if I can't run c4cw on the computers that can't run CEP2 anyway I'll switch back to XP.

Re: process got signal 11

Got few too many hits on searching for "Maverick Meerkat SIGSEGV AMD CPU". Am going to wait it out a bit... Intel only here.

Re: process got signal 11

I see some SIGSEGV errors have been reported on launchpad, but none with AMD in the search string.
Hopefully it's solved in a future update soon.
