Hi,
----------------------------------------I'm running World Community Grid BOINC Manager 6.2.28 on Windows 7 Professional. PC is running Intel Core i7 870, Nvidia GTX 460. Sometimes, but not always, the screensaver will flicker between a black screen with the Windows taskbar, and the screensaver itself. Is there any way to resolve this? Thanks. -Mike [Edit 1 times, last edit by TKH at Sep 9, 2010 3:31:22 PM] |

Hi Mikazo.
----------------------------------------I think this is just a pause in your video card when when it swaps buffers. I don't think there is much that can be done, although there are people around here that know a lot more about video cards than I do. I have my screen savers all set to blank screen and hence there is not a flicker when I interrupt it. And, the CPU time that is normally spent on the screensaver is used by the science project. Regards, and thanks for contributing. |

Like RT said it's best not to use the screensaver as it uses more power and CPU time.
----------------------------------------If you still want to use it, everytime you go to the computer to do something and the screensaver is on press the ESC key. ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz |

Seen that in past, but it never bothered me. Past, because I don't run CPU time eating SSs, it just going into blank. It has to constantly fetch info from the client to show the right picture so depending on settings easily eats up to 5% of the CPU time.
----------------------------------------Now, why is the SS not releasing the memory I don't know. Strictly speaking after coming out of display energy saving mode, the only thing ever needed is to have that sign-in screen show. Now on tricks, try the escape keep instead of mouse and tell us if it's different. Soon WCG will upgrade to 6.10, so maybe then it changes... the controls for the SS are then more expanded also.

Hi again,
I'm not sure if using the ESC key will help. Perhaps I should have been more specific with my original post. While the screensaver is on, it continues to flicker back and forth between a black screen and the taskbar to the screensaver itself, and repeats this cycle indefinitely. I realize the screensaver might use some CPU usage, but I like having it to look at, so I'd like to find a solution if possible. -Mike |

Ok, no can't say to have seen that, but have read on 'flicker'. Maybe intense computations interfere with the frame reloading. Notably on the WCG device profile you can set frames and the CPU amount.
----------------------------------------Are you running 100% CPU use or less for BOINC? If on 60% throttle, then the client pauses on a X seconds on Y seconds off cycle. On a search over at Berkeley, enter the flicker as advanced search word and select 1 year and you get some hits of others having this and it seen also with some 6.10 versions. http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_search.php edit: corrected link address

Hi again.
---------------------------------------- Sekerob is one of the best at knowing about these kinds of things and he seems to be at a dead end. (Sekerob... that link did not work for me ..( missing or bad parameter: search_max_time; supplied: )) I would like to be more encouraging but I suspect it is in the video card and so I am thinking you are pretty much stuck with it. Perhaps DataMan will know more. |

Well Sek's going to poke me with a sharp stick and you can use this information or ignore it but here is what I would do. This is based on GPU crunching and designed get your card and BOINC in sync with what's happening currently.1. Upgrade BOINC to 6.10.58 (6.2.x is GPU stupid )2. Go to nVidia and make sure you have the current GTX4xx vid driver (I think its 258.96) 3. Load CUDA 3.1 .dll's (should have nothing to do with the problem but will get your card to a BOINC/MS/nVidia certified config.) Some of this should have nothing to do with the problem but I have proved over and over to myself that current BOINC releases are much happier when the card (even though not used to crunch) has a certified config of BOINC, drivers and .dll's. The GTX4xx are screaming gamer cards but they still have some sporatic problems in BOINC land. Good luck and please post back if you choose to do this whether it works or not. If nothing else, you will have the most recent config for your card. OK ... let the stick poking begin. ![]() ![]() |

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions. The first thing I did was install BOINC 6.10.58. Then I checked my Nvidia system information, and it turns out I'm already running GTX4xx driver 258.96, as well as the CUDA 3.1.1 DLL. I let the screensaver run for a few minutes, and the only time I see a flicker between the taskbar and the screensaver is when the currently displayed project changes. Docking@Home has been the most problematic for flickering between taskbar and screensaver, but it seemed stable after upgrading the BOINC manager. I think I'll call this problem solved for now, unless it decides to show up again. I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks for the help! -Mike |

That is great news, mikazo. You really do have a very good GPU there. Now that everything is in sync, you should checkout some GPU projects and put that badboy to good use. You will be amazed the amount of work you can do with it. Thanks for crunching ...
