Is there any collected wisdom about being able or not to raise CPU percentage for a laptop on a chill pad?
----------------------------------------Any easy to use reliable software temp monitors? I have a Core 2 Duo laptop with a T7200 processor, an i5-520M hyper threaded dual core, and I am about to install an i7-840QM hyper-threaded quad. That's a lot of potential crunching power to keep at 60%. I would think that the chill pads would make a fairly good difference. When I check the machines, they are pretty cool on the bottom of the case. Any received and collected wisdom will be appreciated. |

If you're running windows this program can be installed to monitor your temps.

No matter if you put your laptop on a cryogenic freezer, dust still collects inside and faster if fans spin at high rev. Keep it clean and use TThrottle as an automated BOINC slow down control should temps go into the red area.

I use Almico Speedfan to monitor temperatures. Another good option is CPUID HWMonitor.
IMHO, cooling pads doesn't make a big difference, or any at all. I'm too cautious with CPU usage on laptops. I have similar machines: Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.0GHz) - 33.33% CPU usage. Core 2 Duo P7350 (2.0GHz) - 60.00%. Core i7-740QM (1.73GHz-2.93GHz) - 25.00%! (with HT on = 8 cores) I know I'm playing safe, but I had a bad experience with a laptop and BOINC in the past that I don't want to have again. Sekerob uses a program that adjusts CPU usage dynamically based on a target CPU temp that you define. It's probably the best option. |

bono_vox,
----------------------------------------Speedfan (for windows only), per Almico ignores laptops and only works as a temp indicator. Per the author, he thinks that laptop manufacturers do a better job in keeping the fan spinning correctly. Read that several years ago and sure enough I've got it on my Vaio and it does nothing.

Yes, I use it only for temperature readings. I've never used the "fan speed" features of the program, not even on desktops.

I just turn mine upside down at night and run it at 100%.
I have used RealTemp to monitor temps and the lappy keeps itself cool enough for me. I can usually tell when the fans needs to be vacuumed ... it starts to rev higher and higher! |

I have a few laptops running. What I did was go to Walmart and buy some baking cooling trays. I sit the laptops on them to get good airflow. They had one cooling tray that stacks three high and it works well since the screens are almost closed with only the mouse (mice) holding them open.
----------------------------------------The above discussion makes sense to keep the fans from running at full speed (and consequently wear out quickly). I had a Toshiba that I had to replace the fans in twice. (A real pain). Now it is in semi-retirement being used by a grandaughter. ![]() |

What have you done from the suggestions in this and your other thread?
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...ead,29046_offset,0#279275 What are the temps at? PS. Like SnowCrash's idea; use to do this with a Pent D I stuck in a desktop replacement one time. |
