Howdy DatUdderGuy, Can you please follow these steps to help give me a clean slate on fixing this issue? 1. Uninstall the agent using the control panel and add/remove applications on Windows. 2. Manually delete C:/ProgramData/BOINC directory if it still exists. 3. Download an updated version of the client by clicking on this link. http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_6.10.58_windows_intelx86.exe (Save it to your Desktop or somewhere easy to remember, please don't just click run) 4. Right click on the downloaded icon and choose 'Run as Administrator' 5. Follow the install, on the third screen (if I'm remembering correctly) you will want to click advanced and install it as a service. Here are the install instructions https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/installInstWin.jsp 6. Let us know what happens for you on this install. Thanks, -Uplinger Dear uplinger - Please confirm you want Boinc version 6.10.58 installed, rather than latest version, 6.2.28. I have just performed your "clean slate" list with 6.10.58 and got an identical result. Prior to that, I downloaded 6.2.28, again(!) and also had identical result. Which version do you wish to proceed with? Thanks, Ken Dear Uplinger - Just a reminder - Check list complete. Please advise which Boinc version to proceed with, and next step to take. I'm all ears! Thanks, Ken |

Still not attached to WCG?
----------------------------------------Plz would you try the workaround in one of my previous posts... this one, in which you have to paste in your account key without the <> and let us know if it says the client is already attached or not: boinccmd --project_attach www.worldcommunitygrid.org <account_key> If this works in this weird case, we can document it as a workaround in the FAQ's. thx Any proxies in the neighborhood? [ot]I've been testing TOR+Viproxy+Polipo+Vidalia+FireFox Tor Button add-in the past day. Everything continued to work (after learning the hard way to config), except Google now thinks my computer is bot machine wanting me to enter a Captcha on every search and I cant log into the Router LocalHost page with Firefox, but can with Opera. Now I use iXQuick, which is a quick search engine.[/ot] edit: paste

OK.. I am just a passerby but after reading through this, it seems to me that the problem may indeed be with Norton. I have always thought of it as the only Virus you have to purchase to run on your machine. Of course it could be some un-paid-for virus...perhaps root-kit variety.
----------------------------------------While this is a bit of work, and I really don't know if it will help or not, I would try it: 1) Use your favorite search engine to find and download "Microsoft Securtity Essentials (MSE)" 2) Download MSE but don't install it yet. 3) Unplug your machine from the net. 4) Uninstall Norton and all it's accessories-parts & pieces using add/remove programs. 5) Reboot the machine. 6) Confirm (using add/remove programs) that all traces of Nortion are gone (you may have to uninstall and reboot again). 7) Install the Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) you downloaded earlier. (It is free). 8) Connect to net and start MSE. 9) Download the updates to MSE 10) Scan your system with MSE (Full-takes quite a bit of time) and assuming it is clean, 11) Startup the BOINC Manager and attempt to connect to WCG (whatever version you have) 12) If it works, great!! if not, sorry for wasting your time I only suggest this because lots of other things have failed to resolve it. Now this all assumes that you have the capability/license/disks or whever else needed to reinstall Norton should this fail. As a side-note I run MSE exclusively and my ISP scans all my email before I ever see it. Good Luck, Thanks for Contributing, and Have a Great Week! ![]() |

RT - Thank you for the suggestion. I have tried disabling both Norton AV and Norton Firewall with no change. I am not certain that disabling them is equivalent to uninstalling, but I DO know that uninstalling is a MOTHER to accomplish! For now, I am banishing even the thought. Get thee behind me, Satan! In addition, see following post. Thanks again. I appreciate the response Ken |

He wanted a "clean slate" and I wanted to make sure he got it. But I bit the bullet, followed your suggestion and I am now attached to and running projects! Shame on me for having so little faith! I HOPE this is indeed the end of the problems, but I have a nagging worry over WCG's inability to accept my name and password. This problem has not been directly addressed, but apparently by-passed by the Boinc command. Is this problem likely to rear its ugly head again in the future? Or have we achieved a true and lasting peace? If you (and Uplinger?) feel this problem is truly solved, I will edit the first post to reflect that fact. Thank you so much for your help. Feels great to be started! Ken |

Great that worked. On the account key, this from Help:
----------------------------------------What is my BOINC account key and where do I find it? The BOINC Account key is a unique identifier that is used by the BOINC client and the BOINC server to uniquely identify you, and your computers, registered under your member name. You may find your BOINC account key on your My Profile page. Essentially it's a hash of some profile information. If you forgot both your email address you registered with and your password you can still get into your project account (on regular BOINC projects) by fetching the number from the account file and sign in with that, which is why you would not want to publish the key, except that feature is not enabled on WCG on the sign-in page which would look like: Log in with authenticator Possibly the techs will want to still get to the bottom, but right now they'll be quite busy when they get into the office tomorrow, the most important, that you're crunching now. cheers

Sounds like they found your problem ... at least a way to get by it for now and let you get on with crunching. It still don't understand just what went wrong.
----------------------------------------I have had so many problems that, after analysis, came back to Norton that I guess that is my default when something does not make sense to me. Sooo I will appologize and say "Woops". Have a great week ![]() |

DatUdderGuy,
I was able to attach a machine properly using the GUI interface using your login. I am unsure of what on your machine was limiting it from connecting properly. I am happy that you were able to attach your computer to World Community Grid. I wonder if you have a second computer or a friends computer that you could try connecting using the original steps you tried that failed. This would let us know it was limited to your machine. What is causing this issue on your machine, I am not certain at this time. My assumption like everyone the others in this forum is that you have some security software that is limiting the actual boinc manager. Thanks, -Uplinger |

What is causing this issue on your machine, I am not certain at this time. My assumption like everyone the others in this forum is that you have some security software that is limiting the actual boinc manager. Thanks, -Uplinger Uplinger - First, for general info, after getting my computer attached and running, I uninstalled version 6.10.58 and all vestiges thereof. I then installed version 6.2.28 and verified that I could not attach the computer to projects. I then used the boinccmd workaround and it attached me to projects and got me running. This verifies that the boinccmd will bypass the problem in both Boinc versions. That should help any others with this problem, should they exist. Second, I have no second computer. Installing and checking Boinc on a friends computer MAY be do-able, but not immediately. Also, it appears that your test of my log-in using YOUR computer accomplishes essentially the same thing that checking with a friends computer would do. It suggests a security software problem on my computer. By the way, I noticed that while you were logged in to my account, you did absolutely NO WORK for me! Third, to address my specific problem, I have stopped downloading any further tasks on my computer. When I have worked through what has already downloaded, I will uninstall my security software (Norton Internet 2010 and Ad-Aware Pro) and see which (if either) resolves my problem. This MAY provide a benefit for some future unknown lost soul venturing naively into this forest, as I did. I will report back the results of this checking when I have them. This will take time, as I downloaded more tasks than I should have. I will also be provoking Norton with great fear and trepidation because of past catastrophes when uninstalling Norton stuff. But it's all for the good of science and humanity! Later, Ken |

Greetings Ken,
Thank you for taking the time to try and figure out what may be causing the issue. I would recommend uninstalling the Ad-Aware pro first. I am unfamiliar with that product and it may be what is limiting the agent. Sorry about the no work...But I needed to be fair to the other members. The main reason I tested was to make sure your login worked and there wasn't something strange causing an error. By you doing the steps on another machine will eliminate it down to something specific to your computer setup. Since you are going through the steps of uninstalling software, this may not be needed (other than getting a second machine attached under your account...hehe). Please let us know how things go for you as this information will be helpful to others in the future. Thanks again! -Uplinger |
