You can save yourself tons of aggravation and time by updating your BOINC client to version 7.0.42 and above and switching from an app_info setup to an app_config setup. Everyone running with an app_info file will have to upgrade eventually anyway because WCG will be fixing the server code bugs that allow an app_info file to work. When that happens and you're still using an app_info you'll be stuck with completed tasks that will not upload. Get ahead of the curve and switch now so you won't be scrambling later. An app_config file is 100x easier to set up and can be changed on the fly without all the pitfalls of using an app_info. I'd be more than happy to help you set it up. Let me know.

Ya know,
----------------------------------------that sounds much better. I'll be getting the newest BOINC, on a new machine that I've not gotten around to setting up. Windows 8 and installing the 7850 (I think). I better hurry because only like 50 days left of this GPU project. So, in short, If you can point me to a thread with the config file, or post a sample and explain it like you would to a small child, I would be most grateful. ![]() ![]() |

What type of CPU and speed. Amount and speed of mobo memory. What version of BOINC are you currently using? Do you plan on running gpu tasks only? (which I highly recommend) In the meantime go here and download the latest BOINC version and have it standing by.

Copy and paste the text below into notepad. Rename it app_config.xml and place it into the WCG project folder. <app_config> <app> <name>hcc1</name> <gpu_versions> <gpu_usage>.125</gpu_usage> <cpu_usage>1.0</cpu_usage> </gpu_versions> </app> </app_config> I'm assuming that finding the correct folder in Win8 is the same as finding it in Win7. You can find that folder by clicking MyComputer>LocalDiskC>ProgramData>BOINC>Projects>WorldComunnitygrid.org. (You must have Windows set to show hidden files and folders to see the ProgramData folder. Do not place it into any Program Files>BOINC folders you may find. It will not work) With the newer versions of BOINC you don't have to stop and restart the client for the changes to take effect. Just go to BOINC>Advanced and click on Read Config File. Let it run 8 tasks for a few days to see what your run times look like. IE if it runs 8 tasks in 16 minutes that's 2 minutes per task. Whatever your run times are is the baseline you use for running more than 8 tasks at a time. After a few days try 10 tasks. You do that by going to the app_config file and changing the gpu_usage to 0.10 and the cpu usage to 0.80. Save the changes and go to BOINC>Advanced and click on Read Config File. Let that run for a few days and see what you run times look like. If the run times go over the amount per task @ 8 then drop it back down to eight. If they are slightly better then next try 12 by changing the gpu-usage and cpu_usage. The formula for figuring the changes is simple. For gpu-usage divide 1 by the number of tasks you want to run. (12 would be 1 divided by 12 which is 0.083) For cpu_usage you divide the number of cpu cores you have by the number of tasks you want to run. (12 would be 8 divided by 12 which is 0.666) It's a trial and error process to see what is the max amount of tasks you can run. I have no idea what a 7850 can handle but i know a 7770 can do 8 so your 7850 should be able to do more. Have fun and I hope I didn't totally confuse you. ![]()

No I'm not confused,
----------------------------------------but i haven't done it yet either :) Thank you for your time and patience, and after saturday sometime early next week, where I have to sit at home and wait for my silver to show up. I can sit there and work on it. 8 tasks sounds PERFECT. For the next month or two, having that rock out some points, I mean science, This comp will be just dedicated to WCG. Thanks nano, at least you have no fear of me catching you, though amazingly, I've started moving up again in the ranks. ![]() |
