Anyone know what's up with the boinc.berkeley.edu site? Set up a machine last night and needed to download BOINC but the site doesn't seem to exist anymore.

Thanks for the Visit! Curious to know what kind of GPUs you've acquired and if you have any recommendations. I have only one type and that is the ATI 7970 Tahiti GPU. I have two versions the standard and the Ghz edition boards. In total I have 14 boards. They have to be paired with a fast 6 core CPU, hyperthreaded at 12 cores. To get the max output out of the 7970 use 10 GPU+ 2 CPU threads in parallel. In this way you can crunch over 1 Mppd. I use only one board per host or rig. But you can very well use up to four boards in a same rig. However the problem will be that your CPU will not follow and so you will not get a good scaling. The reason is that even if HCC is GPU enabled it still uses the CPU in the final stage. The slowest the CPU and the longer the GPU WU will take to finish. This means that if you plan to have two or more baords in the same rig then better you take a dual socket motherboard with two 6 core Xeons, for maximum performance. All this is fine to say but it will depend on how much money you can afford to dish out. All what is said above does not come cheap. Now if money is not an issue and sky is the limit then a killer system would be a rig with four Ghz edition 7970 boards, on a dual socket motherboard with two 10 core Xeons. You would have 40 CPU threads available that is 10 threads per GPU. Such a machine would be able to spit near to 4 Million ppd. But I would wait until the next AMD GPU generation. It is a pity that the 7990 or the equivalent of the GTX 690 bi-GPU board from Nvidia has not been produced by AMD as a mainstream gamer product. It exists as the FirePro professional S10000 board at over 3'000 US$ each. So you can still do better (we said no money talk here) by packing four of these boards and have 8 GPUs in parallel. The CPUs may have difficulties to follow but you may be able to produce 6 Mppd. And yes a small issue, do not forget at least a 2000 Watt PSU. I just heard a distress call from the US Air Force. Time to send the a bunch of SR-71 at full speed. ![]() ![]() |

wow...
----------------------------------------i say wow... If i can't figure out the file I'll come back and ask have to put a new gpu in my machine. Edit: I haven't even figured out how to change my sig... I'm slacking these days. But part of that is I'm moving along in plans to put up solar. 16,000 for 2.76 kw system installed. but for 23,000 a 5.7 kw system, that will cover all my puters, and sell back to the grid. Using about 750 KW a month. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Jack007 at Mar 3, 2013 6:54:02 PM] |
