Good morning Team. In the 60's as a child I lived in Merrit Island and Cocoa Beach, Florida. From my backyard on a canal I would watch the Saturn rockets take off as well as frequent other rocket take offs, mostly secret military missions. I have never though watched the shuttle take off and as it is winding down I need to make it back. I recall as a young teen going down for the Apollo 11 launch back in '69. Went with my slightly older brother and a friend of his on a they-thought-it-was-an-express-bus-but-wasn't. It was 3AM on the day of the launch when we got off (finally) in Cocoa. By then they had figured out from looking at the crowds and the view from the road, we wanted to be back up in Titusville. I, being the youngest, got to beg a ride from a guy stopped to get gas at a station next to the bus depot. The white shirt and tie never registered with me that, as it turned out, he worked at the Cape. He drove us up the road and pulled over pointing to a place with a beautiful view - for something not on the Cape or the islands. Guess it was a good thing we climbed out on the rocks jutting out into the water to see what the beat up rusty sign facing the water said. When we finally figured out it said Restricted Area, we chose to move on shall we say - just in case. We ended up back on the water, next to a marina it turned out in the morning, that still had a great view of the rocket (and the area we had left). We did notice someone out there looking around after the sun was up. The launch was impressive of course, and still quite loud. I won't get into the power plant and it's fences that was between us and the area the guy from the Cape pointed us to. ![]() |

Ahh ... launch stories ... I never got to see a Saturn V launch in person - too young and living on the wrong coast. I have seen several shuttle flights, including some from the VIP area. However, the best launch I ever saw, in my opinion, was a Titan 34D out of Vandenberg that I got to see from the Channel Islands (off the coast of California). Spectacular lighting conditions and a very good pair of binoculars made for an unforgettable sight.

I never have been able to see a shuttle launch, but I've watched everyone of them land at Edwards (including the first one).
----------------------------------------The night landings are the best - you can actually hear the shuttle as it cuts through the air.

The night landings are the best - you can actually hear the shuttle as it cuts through the air. All these launch/return stories are making me think seriously about my bucket list. Very Cool Stories. I am thinking of going to the Trinity Site in October (where the very first A-Bomb was set off in New Mexico). You can go to ground zero if you want. Only open 2 weeks per year. Good Morning MOT and the others that should be MOT members. So glad to have our old members back. Hey DataMan...can you take a hint?? "Monbak, we miss you" ![]() |
