Re: Other Unix distributions that work?

I have been using Ubuntu for the last couple of years; all the current versions in their time, on up to 14 different machines with no problems. Boinc is available from the repositories which makes life simple as it automatically installs and sets things up for you. I also have one box currently running Debian and it works the same way. As it should since Ubuntu is based on Debian.

Re: Other Unix distributions that work?

I've been using Debian for years, various versions. It works fine. (As that's the base from which Ubuntu comes, it's not surprising, but thought I'd mention it explicitly as nobody else has.)

Re: Other Unix distributions that work?

I am using Ubuntu 8.04 and 5.10.45 client [from Boinc] without issue for several years. The CEP2 runs fine.

Re: Other Unix distributions that work?

I feel the same way about this project helping the world more. Curing cancer and all that is fine but cancer would be a lot less common if we didn't extract and burn fossil fuels.

This can go down in two ways. We learn to control nature sustainably. Or nature will force us into compliance, this will involve a lot of death.

When CEP2 is supported by windows, I'm going exclusive. I don't care about badges.

BINGO! :) thank you for more eloquently stating the point :)

and currently my only machine that isn't cep exclusive is one that I'm letting a freind use (she scared of linux and i'm telling her to get her own computer :P )

confused Re: Other Unix distributions that work?

I'm thinking about installing Ubuntu 10.04 for the first time. I plan to run cep2 mainly. My question is am I better to run the 32 or 64 bit version? confused I'm running a I7 980X @ 3.33Ghz with 12GB ram.

I will be installing Linux on a 1 TB dedicated Western Digital hard drive. In terms of swap space is it best to dedicate half the drive?

I'm currently using Win 7 64 I will be dual booting. Your help with this would be much appreciated

Definitely use the 64bit version. coffee
As for swap, read this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq

Re: Other Unix distributions that work?

I've set Ubuntu 10.04.1 64bit up in vm ware player 3.1.2 build-131458 my whole system is a I7 980X win7 ult 64bit & has 12gb ram set vm to use 8gb. installed boinc 6.10.17 from packet manager when it gets a cep2 task it crashes. Here is some of the log file.

I gather I'm getting this error because I do not have 32 bit libreys installed. Can someone please guide me through how to fix this problem?

Re: Other Unix distributions that work?

Make sure you are connected to the internet and open a terminal and type the following into it:

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs libstdc++6 freeglut3

That will get you the 32 bit libraries that you need.

Hi,

Nothing to do with the libraries, which you less complex can get via the Synaptic Update Manager (soon permanently replaced by the 10.04 included Ubuntu Software Center). Your client is presently only set to ask for 64bit work. With this FAQ http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,28642 it's explained how to teach BOINC to also ask for 32 bit work, which is all what WCG has.
