Re: smile smile Join MyOnlineTeam Today or sooner !!! smile smile

Hi Daj,

On the free and cheap front VNC wins hands down the only other alternative is windows own remote desktop that I use to see the webserver but I don't think this was part of ME. Just be careful with VNC as it can be used as a back door to your PC's I suggest disabling the java client support and blocking ports in the 58XX and 59XX range from the outside world on your router.

But you are onto a winner btw I found VNC when I went into a PC shop to buy PCAnywhere and was told by the assistant that I should download the VNC viewer as it was free - That shop shut down after another couple of months shock

Top advise though

Dave

Remote access to machines

Hi DAJ,

VNC is fine! In the windows world you find two free products, RealVNC and TightVNC. I also use RealVNC.

Even in the free RealVNC version the password to log into a remote machine is not plaintext but (relatively) safe, only the session *after* login is not (everything communicated between the two VNC machines after the login can be eavesdropped). So if you do nothing like entering more passwords into applications or writing secret documents or the like, you can also use it outside your safe segment.

You can also find documents on the web how to secure the free version by tunneling the VNC protocol through a tool named "stunnel" which adds encryption to your installation if you need a really safe environment for the outside communication.

Free VNC implementations also exist for other OSes like Linux or MacOS (OSX) etc. These can talk to each other, of course! Mighty cool to open a Linux window or a Mac window on your Windows98 machine cool )

Best wishes, Stefan.

Re: MOT rank #3 for "Results Returned"

Stefan --

We have been #3 in results for a few days now, but I would not put much stock in it. We have a member who is no longer active that was having some kind of problems on his system and was getting credit for returning results with little or no processing. Dave Autumns tried for some time to contact him to see if we could fix his problem, but was unable to do so. As to if this means you are getting old -- I would be the last one to say that since I am already retired biggrin

PS -- like your flags -- we are all standing together

Your team mate and friend,

Dave --

I didn't know about Windows Remote Desktop. Thanks -- I can now check on the PC in my bedroom to see that it is crunching along well without having to get up and go back there.

Too bad about that shop that advised you on VNC. More retailers should be so honest. I would love to find an auto mechanic that is that honest.

Last week in our team chat, there was some desire to have a team history on the team website. Since our team captain has been quite busy with his work schedule, I decided to sort through the Team Forum and find the sequence of MyOnlineTeam team threads since the project began. Here is the list I came up with (starting with 5 members, 2988 points per day):

That's 2308 posts in our team threads! I browsed some of the threads and there is a lot of interesting stuff that has gone on. It is interesting to see the greetings of the then new members that are now familiar friends in here.

Ho ya so many fine memories confused devilish

And I was # 7 smile

Thx Dave - you're right it is not part of ME. You can download a Micosoft client to run on ME/98/95 that lets you look at XP/2000 machines from your ME machine but it did not appear that there was a way to add something to ME that would allow the remote desktop from XP.

I do see a security risk in that I can see the shared folders on my other machines so I will take your advice on the Java and port blocking.

The RealVNC had a pay version that has the encryption as well but I think the free version will meet my needs - no need to check on my machines while on vacation biggrin

I saw that it had Linux versions as well so if we ever get a Linux version I'm ready - of course I will need to buy so more machines to run Linux on.....

Got one on a 3000+ 80% after 21 hours

Any more like this out there?

Dave --
My old Pentium III (800 MHz) has had two back to back monsters. One completed in just over 67 hours and generated 929 points. The next one it picked up is at 66% after about 20 hours. My primary system, a P4 (2.4 GHz), has been picking off 5 and 6 hour work units.
