I'm not addicted ..... But I have been thinking that old Pentium II in the basement gathering dust should be able to crunch a few more points and it has been a couple of years since I last upgraded the main machine.... Did you know there are a lot of articles on the web on how to build a farm of computers.... farm of computers? Do you mean a powerful computer built with multi processors?  I would like to get if it is not too difficult to make!  |

I'm not addicted ..... Did you know there are a lot of articles on the web on how to build a farm of computers.... farm of computers? Do you mean a powerful computer built with multi processors? I would like to get if it is not too difficult to make! More of a small ranch of machines. If you want to make a set of real cheap number crunchers you could set up a series a computers that have a minimal configuration - so for example you have them set up to boot off a network and load the operating system from an image file and run off a ram disk in memory - a diskless boot. That gives you a machine that has a minimum power draw and with less components a minimum cost to put together (motherboard, processor, chip fan, and memory) using boards with integrated LAN and video. You could do this for like $100 a computer using low end parts (Duron 1.8 GHz) - not a killer machine but if have 20 of them they would be pretty respectable. This would be pretty easy using Linux, no so easy with Windows but it does look possible. Not that I'm really considering this. Well not too seriously. You know with a diskless boot you could probably share a power supply which would reduce cost as well.... [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 3, 2005 1:35:06 AM] |
