This is not a current problem for me; but it might be for others.
----------------------------------------I have five computers crunching. They require more than one WCG profile. Two are desktops which can run all projects and have CPU = 100%/100% Two are laptops which can similarly run all projects; but CPU usage is limited to 60%. The last is a netbook, running only Cancer from WCG (plus a couple of other projects running on BOINC software and with short WU's. So, one WCG project and the CPU usage limited to 60%. So, that is three profiles with significant differences. I used Home, School and Work. On one computer, my "biggie", BOINC Manager refused to acknowledge the correct profile. No matter what I did, manual updates, re-boots, nothing would get this machine to recognize the correct profile. I wound up changing the configuration of the profile to match the one it did recognize. This necessitated changing the config of the of the netbook, which was on that profile. Not wanting to disturb the other three computers, I wound up putting the Netbook on Default, but customizing Default so that only the name is "Default", the config indicating only the Cancer project. There must be some reason why a computer through BOINC Manager will refuse all efforts to get it the recognize the appropriate WCG profile. There are more and more of us running various projects on more than one computer, and multiple computers requiring different Profile configurations. At last check, all computers were configured correctly, four running all projects, the netbook running only Cancer. Any advice? ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by mitrichr at Jun 5, 2010 6:47:30 PM] |

Are you associating the correct device to the correct profile/venue? Duplicate names spring to mind!
----------------------------------------There are 4 standard profiles, including Default you can use. One of those named 3 (school, work, home) u can designate as the default for any new devices that are attached to WCG. And then a WCG exclusive only working on WCG is the undocumented user-named profiles. Not supported, use at own risk!

if ANY setting changed locally, profile changes on website have no effect, other than project selections on last profile loaded.
have you tried to clear the preferances locally, then change web site profile, then update |

The associated profile is always printed in the message log with timestamp when it was last modified. Once that is confirmed, clearing the local prefs is sufficient. Sometimes though the server side messenger system gets stuck and thus the client will not get the modified information from the servers.
----------------------------------------edit: as of this afternoon the messenger seemed not to be stuck since I happened to change school then and it showed in the host log: 13319 World Community Grid 30-5-2010 21:54:14 General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 30-May-2010 16:36:30) 13320 World Community Grid 30-5-2010 21:54:14 Computer location: school

Thanks.
----------------------------------------What I check is the Device Manager in WCG My Grid, vs the profile name for that machine in BOINC Manager messages on the machine. They should be the same. If they are the same, then everything is O.K. On one machine, in Device Manager at WCG, the machine showed the profile as School, with all projects, when on the machine, it showed in messages as work, with just Cancer. So, what I finally had to do was simply alter the configuration settings for Work in WCG Device Manager. That profile had been for the netbook, and only Cancer had been selected. So, now, I needed to find a new profile for the netbook. As I stated, I had three computers where everything was fine, so I did not want to disturb anything there. Default was not in use, so I used Default for the netbook, but knocked out all of the projects except Cancer. |

On one machine, in Device Manager at WCG, the machine showed the profile as School, with all projects, when on the machine, it showed in messages as work, with just Cancer. Two things can think of: 1: Atleast some of the old (v5) clients has had a problem using the correct venue, but a switch in your case from school to home, client update, and afterwards home back to school and new client-update should normally fix the problem. 2: If you're also attached to other BOINC-projects, remember to select all projects to use the same venue. If the affected computer is also attached to another project as work, it's possible it won't like to be school in WCG... If this is your problem, make sure you've configured the same venue in all projects. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might." hmmm, there I thought the client acted as middlemen to port the settings to all projects attached to the same client when a profile update was received. At least, in past I saw the changes made at one project appear at another... maybe not. Maybe BAM as a central control takes care of such issues.
----------------------------------------mitrichr, why have you got all these esoteric problems?

mitrichr, why have you got all these esoteric problems? Good question. And, why one one machine out of five? |

Ingleside-
----------------------------------------Thanks for your advice. Regarding other projects running BOINC outside of WCG, yes, I crunch on about eight other projects. But I do not see them as having specific profiles by name. Yes, there is configuration, which should match up with what is configured in WCG for the machine, but no specific name. Sek- I don't think that I have especially esoteric problems or questions. Rather, I think that I am not averse to bringing them forward. There are probably people, sometimes many people, with similar problems, who don't use the forums, don't wish to seem ignorant, whatever. Anything that gets solved for me gets solved for them also, if they do in fact come looking for help and search out the topics. |

mitrichr, let me not expound. Why would WCG have profiles with standard BOINC names? ALL projects have profiles, here called device profiles and at BOINC projects called venues or computation preferences where with the switch link you can see them all side by side. Unless you activate a profile/venue/comp.pref on a project, like here, you wont see them listed except at the top with a create link.
----------------------------------------What gets solved for you is not solved for others as reading back prior discussions on a topic is not always done (not allot I think). I can see the hits on FAQ's and thus know!
