"When displaing graphics use at most..." (Resolved)

What is this all about? What is the received wisdom on this setting at the WCG Device Manager, on desktops, laptops,, and BTW, this setting does not appear in Preferences in BOINC Manager on the machines.

"When displaying graphics, use no more than x% of CPU", X=5% apparently being the default

I tried to get onto BOINC FAQ but was unable to connect.

Thanks.

Re: "When displaing graphics use at most..."

I think it's for the screensaver graphics.
I've never changed it and it's had no effect.
Of course, I don't use the screensaver. I prefer all available CPU time being available to the actual science calculations.

Re: "When displaing graphics use at most..."

The options for frame rates and CPU resource is project specific and thus not available as option in the client. It's been there for almost as long as WCG converted the sciences to 6.x API, on or shortly after endorsing version 6.2.28 of the client and how dare I doubt, an FAQ is discussing the topic: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...read,4925_offset,0#191742. It also touches on screensavers and GPU crunching ;-)

Re: "When displaing graphics use at most..."

Thank you Sek, for pointing me to that really very useful thread, which I shall bookmark.

What I conclude is that the 5% refers to a maximum CPU usage for the screen saver, not for crunching on WU's.

If that is the case, what about other screen savers,e.g. those that come as, in my case, part of Windows?

Re: "When displaing graphics use at most..."

WCG has no control over those as these will not talk to the BOINC client [a duh observation]

Yes, I had one called shleep and that sucked 50% of the CPU time with all the 3D gimmicks... at the expense of crunching, so mine are either alternating static images every 15-30 seconds [there are several superb themed ones coming with Lucid Lynx Linux] or plain blank / black.

The BOINC SS has a configurable timer to cause the screen to blank out after X minutes. Then the SS stops using cycles, or most.
