...It sounds like someone has a very specific view of what this place is for: WCG only, no GPU-talk, no politics, no religion. That sounds like a place I have no interest in. Jonathan -- The problem for many of us is that when any of these topics have come to the team thread, they dominate and have become the only topic anyone discusses. |

I hope everyone is a bit mellower (if that's a word) tonight.
---------------------------------------- I wish I could say 27 Barn Owls are engaged in mortal combat to occupy the owl box tonight ... alas no. I think I will look back on it as one of those projects I am glad I did ... and would never do again ... even for money. Cheers MOT ... crunch on. ![]() ![]() |

Hey Coingames, have you ever heard of this University in the Netherlands? University for Humanistics, Utrecht, the Netherlands Apparently a lot of American Humanists go there for their PhD work and I was curious if the institution was particularly prestigious (or if it is b.s.)... Hi Jonathan, i haven't heard of it (which doesnt mean that much though, i have not been following the academic scene for about 20 years or so)but will check aroud a bit. Gerard |

A short time before I first joined MOT, there had been an event that had resulted in a number of folks leaving the team, including the then captain. In time, more problems arose and I ended up leaving the team myself and going back to solo crunching. Eventually, I came back and slowly got more and more involved. As a new captain, I wanted to strive for peace and stability. We had a good bit of rebuilding to do. I learned just how hard it was to recruit new members. If you look back in our past threads, you will see that we have gained new members. However, we have had more leave than join. We have made tremendous strides as a team and accomplished so much but it increasingly became more and more being done by fewer and fewer. We have recently celebrated the fact that we typically have 38-40 members returning results on a typical day. That's much better than the 28-30 that it has been. Still, we have a long way yet to go to get back to the 60-65 it once was. I have tried to give everyone an equal hearing, to respect each person's views. I have been told that I clearly care about the team. I have come to realize that I probably care too much. I hate to see anyone leave and have done what I could to try to convince folks to stay. Truth is, while it is not good to see someone leave, I have to accept that it is not necessarily bad either. As a team, we are not going to be a good fit for everyone and not everyone will be suited to us. I have tried to do what I could to keep our team thread active, encouraging folks to participate and trying to start conversations. Invariably, that got more silence. Lately, we have had a few folks who have helped keep the thread active. When some members raised the idea of expanding into other projects, I agreed to thinking that if it could help grow the team, it would be a good thing. It could also be a way to help keep someone interested in crunching if they were starting to burn out on crunching here. I tried to find what I thought were deserving, well run projects that were complementary to the reasons we crunch here. When someone seemed to have a knack for finding a project they thought we should be part of and creating a MOT team there and then letting me know after the fact, I choose to ignore the lack of respect because I thought it was more important to keep them happy and crunching with us. When members posted in other threads in ways that clearly violated the rules here, I did not address the issue as I should have. We each set an example with our posts that reflects on us and our team. It has nothing to do with political correctness. It is common courtesy, simple respect and basic decency, even if the other person really is a fool and an idiot. If you want to be respected, you have to give it first. Instead, when others in the community wanted to have them banned, I tried to look out for them and warn them. I created a thread a while back to congratulate a member on a big accomplishement. The first response was a personal attack by someone outside the team. I did end up reporting it to the admins but not before there were three posts attacking them in turn. We are supposed to be a global team but just how much reason do we give our global members to post here and be active in our thread when we only discuss topics and issues specific to the US? Truth is, I have been a large part of our problems and I've only caused myself most of the frustration I feel. In privately apologizing to RT yesterday, he made several points that have made me stop and think. I want to publicly apologize to him and the team. Contrary to appearances, my mouth is not a perpetual motion machine. I will continue to post the stats each day but if you want to keep our thread active, that is going to be up to the rest of you. I need to take some time and take a hard look at myself.
