![]() Welcome to the World Community Grid team thread for MyOnlineTeam! We would love to have you as a member! What are we? MyOnlineTeam is a global group of people who believe that individuals can make a real difference in the world. Our main focus is on distributed computing where we use the idle computing power of our PCs to process data for a number of research projects. We use the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) software to do this. This is a safe and reliable way to make a difference in the world. Most people do well to utilize more than five percent of the computing power of their PCs. With BOINC, the other ninety-five percent that is "going to waste" gets used without impacting your normal computer use. In return, you will help with efforts to find new medicines, treatments and cures for diseases like cancer, HIV, malaria and muscular dystrophy, expand our understanding of our environment and climate, help make new discoveries about our universe, and much more, all while getting to know folks from all over the world, from different cultures and backgrounds and a wide variety of viewpoints. MyOnlineTeam is also involved in global micro-finance thru Kiva.org. Kiva is the world's first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend to unique entrepreneurs around the globe. The best part of all of this is that you choose how much you want to get involved. You can get involved in any one of the multiple projects in which we participate when you want as much as you want. Who are we? Our members are from all over the world and come from diverse backgrounds. With MyOnlineTeam, you will find you have friends from all over the world. We know what it is like to lose a loved one to disease. We understand what it is like to look up at the sky and ponder the great questions facing mankind. We all feel the desire to make a difference. We will do our best to ensure that you are glad you found us! Being a global group and a diverse one at that, you will find that each of us can have very different views. Because we are so different, you will find that we are all about respect, tolerance and diversity. We know that while we are so different, we are very much the same - we are here to make a difference and it is that work that truly matters. Our history: MyOnlineTeam was founded on November 16th, 2004 when the World COmmunity Grid project first launched. We have been growing ever since. While the World Community Grid is our birthplace and remains our primary home and project, we have expanded into other projects in line with our overall mission. If you want to crunch only one project, such as WCG, or multiple projects, we're a team where you can do both, all with the same team. Where to begin: Since you are reading this, you have most likely already created an account here at the World Community Grid and downloaded the BOINC program. If not, just click on the Home link above. To see who all of us are and to join MyOnlineTeam here at WCG, just click here: JOIN MyOnlineTeam! To participate with us in our other projects, simply go to the BOINC program and click on Tools - Attach to project. When you attach to a project for the first time, you will also create an account there. We recommend that you use the same username and e-mail address that you did here at World Community Grid. To attach to a project, enter the correspoding URL for it from the list below in field provided for that. Project: URL: More information about each of these projects can also be found at the above URLs. Once you have attached to a project, be sure to go to it's URL above and join MyOnlineTeam at that project as well. To participate with us at Kiva, go to http://www.kiva.org and register. Once you have registered, click on the Community link, enter MyOnlineTeam in the Search box, and click on our name in the results. Then simply click on the Join Now button. Now that you have gotten started, do not stop there. Don't hesitate to post here whether it may be a question you have, help for a problem, or to say hi and get to know us. We really do want to hear from you!! We are currently building a new team website at MyOnlineTeam.org Until we progress further along with that, you can follow these links in the meantime to see our HALL OF FAME banners for use in your forum signature here: Hall Of Fame Runtime Banners - Part 1 Hall Of Fame Runtime Banners - Part 2 Hall Of Fame Results Banners Hall Of Fame Points Banners We have pictures and "smilies" you can use in your posts here or in your forum signature: Pictures Smilies - Part 1 Smilies - Part 2 Smilies - Part 3 Smilies - Part 4 Smilies - Part 5 Smilies - Part 6 Smilies - Part 7 Smilies - Part 8 Smilies - Part 9 Smilies - Part 10 Images displaying active team members statistics here at WCG can be found here. We have a limited number of country banners available. We also have country flags available too. Just ask here and we'll give you a link to use for what you want. We also encourage you to join in the discussions and post here! The Fine Print/Disclaimers/Et cetera: That last sentence above doesn't apply to just members of MyOnlineTeam. We welcome postings here from our fellow crunchers on other teams or on no team at all. We simply ask that you follow the rules for forum posts here at WCG. There are no topics that are we do not allow here, again, as long as they comply with the forum rules. As much as we would like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and be able to work with you offline if there happened to be a problem or question with a post you made, that sort of communication just isn't possible here at WCG. If we can't do that for everyone, it is not fair to do it for anyone. Thus, any post that we believe violates the forum rules will simply be reported to the WCG administrators and any decisions or actions will be up to them. This will be true no matter who made the post, member or not. We are quite a diverse group needless to say and we have very different viewpoints on many issues. However, when it comes to our work here, we are united and of one voice. We work to do our part in the fight against disease, in working togther for the benefit of our fellow humans. Thanks for visiting our team thread!---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by keithhenry at May 12, 2010 2:31:38 AM] |

Handy little transition tip: if you want to quote a post from our previous thread, open that thread in a separate tab/window, click on quote on the desired post, then click anywhere in the body of the post, hit Ctrl-A (Select All) and Ctrl-C (Edit-Copy). Now paste that into your post body for this thread and add your response.

As I like to say, "keep crunching for cures, because god knows prayer doesn't work."-------------------------I will keep trying and you are wrong--i know from personal experience it works--it depends on what you ask for--!!?? Better be safe than sorry --Your friend in Virginia--Gerald--marysduby--@%#@$%%-- It is kind of heartening to realize that there probably aren't two more different people (both theologically and politically) than you and I, and yet here we are here united in our desire to find cures to help people. There's the essence of this team - a diverse group that believes in respect and tolerance. Disease has no respect and shows none. Whatever our differences, we're all here for the same reason. That is something we have to keep in mind all the time because it is true for everyone, not just our team. We've gotten to know each other here on our team and that helps us understand our differences. Not knowing as well others not on our team makes that more of a challenge. Yes, sometimes it seems like someone may be trying to tweak us and it's tempting to match that. Yes, sometimes it can seem like you're dealing with someone that you're convinced is a "insert-adjective-here". You can seem the same way to them. People like to meet expectations regardless of whether they are low or high expectations. Set them high, especially for yourself. I try to look out for our team but I don't go looking for problems. We're adults here and we're all old enough to deal with any consequences that come our way. If I see a post that attacks someone, I no longer hesitate reporting it no matter who does the attacking. If someone attacks you, responding in kind is only going to hurt you. Whoever chooses to attack another poster will end up in time answering to the admins for that. Responding in kind only adds you to the problem. I know it's not easy but don't respond. Report the post and let the admins address it. That's their job, not yours. Look at it this way too. Would you want to join a team when a member of that team attacks you or others? When you attack someone, even though you may simply be defending yourself, a lot of folks see that. It's amazing how many folks read our thread that aren't team members. That's a lot of visibility. If you're looking "in from the outside", would you like what you read? The way we treat each other is the same way we should treat everyone - even when you think they don't deserve it. I expect that I will be updating the header for our thread to include a section for obvious stuff. |

New month, new paper, same old group. It's all good.
Good morning MOT. It's just past 1:30 (AM) here and I've just polished off a project at work that consumed huge amounts of time all week. I wish I got overtime for all those hours.. - D |
