Pausing without user input?

I looked through threads, faq and search, but didn't see the answer to my question.

I have a computer at home which runs 24/7. It is my media center, DVR, system. I thought about putting WCG on it, but am worried that it seems like the program only pauses when there is user input (keyboard, mouse, etc.). That could be a problem because this system might start recording TV shows at anytime without user input, or it might be accessed remotely (xbox360) to run Windows Media center.

Would those things pause the program?

Also..at work I have a computer that is used to collect data. It has minimal user input (keyboard, mouse)--but could collect data then for say 8 hours--and then basically sit idle for many many hours. But I am worried that the agent wouldn't know that even though there is no input, the system is actually pretty busy collecting/analyzing data.

Ok--that is the long description--can it pause without user activity, but from other activity?

Re: Pausing without user input?

No, the current WCG version can't but the new version 6.10 (still in test, but you can try the Alpha 6.10.49) has a feature that can pause BOINC if the none-BOINC load is exceeding X percent. The default is 25%, but you'd probable like it more like 50% or higher... trialling on individual basis is needed to find the best personal fit.

Let me know if this is for you and I'll give you the hotlink.

Re: Pausing without user input?

Well it wouldn't be hard to monitor the systems during normal load and see what the CPU usage is and set it at that. Do you know when the 6.1 version will be final? I am thinking of proposing this to my employer. (I will definitely be doing it at home). One of the things I like about this over SETI, Prime, etc. is that those are single use and this is many use.

Re: Pausing without user input?

6.1 final? That been an alpha alpha of 2 years ago or so. 6.10 you mean of course. Probably never... they will just call it a day at some point and declare it final and suitable for general roll out, then move to 6.12 development where they'll be fixing the bug [we hope] that were left as none-show-stoppers in 6.10. WCG does not endorse lightly. We've seen Recommended in 6.10 several times and multiple retractions, but for a single user to try out on one machine, 6.10.49 is OK presently. Got the 6.10.17 running on Linux and been fine for the past 48 hours [but it's only running WCG]. The techs are loosely planning for June, a beta test likely preambling when we get there.
