Hmm, so is Linux Mint 14 faster than Ubuntu? Is boinc available in it's software center? Today I installed Mint 14 64 bits. DSFL tasks are finishing within less than 2 hours. In Ubuntu 12.10 64 bits they took a while longer(between 2 and a half hours and 3 hours). I've only completed 4 tasks but I will keep an eye on this. Could be just a batch thing. Mint does seem faster than Ubuntu and the interface is a lot better. 1) So few is just *not* a reference, particularly for the highly fluctuating DSFL. Refer to separate thread by I think RaymondFO on extensive comparisons, over many results. FAIK, both Ubuntu and Mint have same kernel base.
2) Overhead of GUI only leads to elapsed time extension, not the effective CPU time, but I'll let myself be educated in this matter. Given I unload the GUI each time when done by running [for Ubuntu], from console "sudo service lightdm stop", getting mostly 99.6-99.8% efficiency. Last time I saw the GUI of my quad must be 2 months ago at least ;>) |

The results of Ubuntu versus Windows 7 run time comparison to crunch various projects over time distributed in a random allocation can be found here: The Ubuntu/Windows 7 Run time Project |

Thanks for your replies.
----------------------------------------It may have been indeed the variation. Some WU's are at 13% or so completed after just 6 minutes of CPU time. Thanks! ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz |

A few days now on Raring Ringtail 13.04 Beta 1 and doing the sudo apt-get update / upgrade each day to get the latest tweaks, this morning had a slug experience while browsing, everything slow, then, did something, tuning the heck, using Ubunbtu Tweak to get any redundant trash off, things started flying like never seen before. Boot time, and BOINC running on 8 cores in under 30 seconds. Windows, sorry, but eat your heart out.
More and more liking Unity, got rid of a few lenses such as the shopping one and setting to not bring up finds from the internet, found in my to read box, this little tool to further tweak in an easy GUI environment: http://www.webupd8.org/2013/03/unity-tweak-tool-available-in-ubuntu.html . No ppa adding needed, it's standard issue now in the Ubuntu Software Centre, going forward referred to as USC. Oh this is going to be the best suited laptop version I've yet to come across of the Ubuntu series. The Sound keeps on improving, though still no control of the internal sub-woofer for the vibrato that comes with Depp Purple's Child in Time. Streaming from Youtube works well, set to drop frames, since the sound is the important bit... nothing so annoying as the jerking and jingle. Crunch on. |

I'm so hapyy, I'm so happy , Ubuntu latest Beta1 of 13.04 plus last nightly updates and wham, boot, back up and crunching in 20 seconds.
----------------------------------------Not so happy about the clock forward/backward which causes BOINC to freeze with the clock setback [reported to devs, who've committed some fixes for next build, hopefully 7.0.57]. No way to get BOINC moving unless exiting daemon and restarting, but that is a simple console command "sudo service boinc-client restart". Crunching on in the meantime on all VINA sciences... 60%+ faster than under W7-64 (but we knew that by now don't we ;>). P.S. Unity Tweak has still not arrived in my USC, but do 3 two GNOME tweak tools, for those who go for the that new Ubuntu flavor. There is though in the Webupd8 article a big red direct link install button: http://www.webupd8.org/2013/03/unity-tweak-tool-available-in-ubuntu.html and the console apt-get instructions from the official ppa repo does work, so up we are with sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool Correction: To find in USC type unity-tweak-tool... 'twas there all along. edit: insert link [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 19, 2013 9:59:59 AM] |

From the noobslab, The Privacy Indicator, showing in top panel of 12.10 and 13.04 [have Unity tested], a neat way to quickly switch off online intertube search inclusion and clear any tracking files. http://www.noobslab.com/2013/02/install-privacy-indicator-002-in-ubuntu.html (a newer version 0.03-1 is in the ppa)

More from noobslab, indicator-multiload, giving 6 option to monitor in the top panel, processor, memory, sys-load, swap-file, network, harddrive. Shrunk the width to 25 pixels to give get them to take same space as the other indicators.
http://www.noobslab.com/2012/02/install-indicator-multiload-in-ubuntu.html Enjoy |

I'm going to install the Xubuntu raring daily build on one of my machines as soon as it runs BOINC dry. It's still on Xubuntu 11.10, so time to try something new. I hope it speeds up as much as Sekerob's machine did!

Snip

Streaming from Youtube works well, set to drop frames, since the sound is the important bit... nothing so annoying as the jerking and jingle. Crunch on. And so, yesterday, out of nowhere, the in-build woofer started showing the true Stanley Clarke: I Wanna Play For You, Too! (All I did was install the Pulseaudio equalizer per http://www.webupd8.org/2013/03/install-pulseaudio-with-built-in-system.html ;). Yes, this is *is* the best Ubuntu for mobile devices ever, to me! |
