I will say that... Raring Ringtail latest nightlies are showing off a solid and never seen before stable performance on my I7-2670QM laptop. Running on top BOINC 7.0.53 special build and 8 HCC concurrent, 100Mhz slower than under W7 and still they run 15-20 minutes faster... subjectively. When back in W7 will run WCGDAWS to get the statistics up on the small 2 dozen done so far.
Sound is still a dog, with the 3.80.9 kernel, but Torvald is promising that will improve substantially when 3.9 is released, maybe in Ubuntu 13.10, come October 2013 or earlier when they've switched to what is called rolling updates. As for the fun bit, Ubuntuists will lick theirt fingers with this: TuxArena | How to Install Anything in Ubuntu , a pretty solid guide, and no joking, of course the aptitude crowbar also available to get things on [not installed by default]. Enjoy |

Here's a nice little [stumbled upon] instruction how to fetch and run a CPU per-core speed, load, and temp monitoring utility in a terminal/console window, and yes as was commentated, you have to widen the console window to see the temperature column. Interesting how between the warmest and coolest core, there is 7C difference.
http://www.overclock.net/t/1336661/monitor-yo...ock-speed-in-ubuntu-12-10 Enjoy (runs on the Raring Ringtail 13.04 nightly, now with 3.80.10.24 build kernel), BOINC 7.0.53 still zooming along) Oh BTW, still using Unetbootin from Windows session to fetch a fresh nightly Ubuntu live_x64 and install straight to the USB memory drive. Else I use sudo apt-get uddate && sudo apt-get upgrade, but that skips any kernel updates, but then there's still sudo synaptic [after installing this rpm manager], to force the kernel updates. |

For the not faint of heart, here is a little goodie for those that test different Linux variations, keep loosing their BOINC installs, and find a new one is created on the next test [notwithstanding WCG attempting to auto-check if it's a familair face], not having made a backup of the BOINC data dir. This is for the adbventurous!
1) On your current Linux find the client_state.xml file and open it in console with sudo gedit client_state.xml (or nano or any pure ascii text editor) 2) Find the <host_cpid> field and annotate the exact hash value 3) Find in the <project> WCG section the <hostid> and annotate exactly. Now you are prepped for your next disastrous test and recover the ID on the next install, premise being, same platform! After installing a new BOINC from clean, connect to WCG again which of course will create a new host [who cares for one without stats at all]. After having succeeded to do that, immediately stop the core client [on Ubuntu in console/terminal: sudo service boinc-client stop Navigate to the BOINC data dir, and open the client_state.xml file again with your fav editor. Now carefully copy over the <host_cpid> and <hostid> values and restart BOINC with same as previous command but with start instead of stop. Open the BOINC manager, select WCG and hit update. Whatever was there of the new host in work gets aborted/crashed, and the results, if any are refetched from the revived host. Been there done that, the client recovered 8 HCC jobs with a 6 day deadline, since when the original work was assigned was 24 hours ago. The proof [the "sent" times get revised]: X0900119960611201004291429_ 1-- ubuntu In Progress 3/7/13 17:52:44 3/13/13 14:05:58 0.00 / 0.00 0.0 / 0.0 X0900119960623201004291429_ 1-- ubuntu In Progress 3/7/13 17:52:44 3/13/13 14:05:58 0.00 / 0.00 0.0 / 0.0 X0900119960439201004291431_ 1-- ubuntu In Progress 3/7/13 17:52:44 3/13/13 14:05:44 0.00 / 0.00 0.0 / 0.0 X0900119960409201004291431_ 1-- ubuntu In Progress 3/7/13 17:52:44 3/13/13 14:05:44 0.00 / 0.00 0.0 / 0.0 X0900119960405201004291432_ 0-- ubuntu In Progress 3/7/13 17:52:44 3/13/13 14:05:44 0.00 / 0.00 0.0 / 0.0 X0900119960335201004291432_ 0-- ubuntu In Progress 3/7/13 17:52:44 3/13/13 14:05:44 0.00 / 0.00 0.0 / 0.0 X0900119960645201004291428_ 1-- ubuntu In Progress 3/7/13 17:52:44 3/13/13 14:05:58 0.00 / 0.00 0.0 / 0.0 X0900119960635201004291428_ 1-- ubuntu In Progress 3/7/13 17:52:44 3/13/13 14:05:58 0.00 / 0.00 0.0 / 0.0 The work that got disposed because of switch host ID, fetched on the initial new host creation. [Now this is a hacked way to "merge" devices, but it has to be done quick, before any results are computed to the end]. Oh and more proof it worked from the My Grid > Device Manager: Device Name Selected Profile Date Installed & Registered ubuntu home 03/07/2013 17:47:07 < created today during new [blunt] test, note the timestamp of the device and that of the sent times on the GFAM/DSFL work. ubuntu home 03/06/2013 13:56:22 < created yesterday during the test, note the timestamp of the device and that of the due time on the HCC tasks above! To be sure, I'd swapped project selection inbetween, deselecting HCC and selecting GFAM/DSFL [which fly on Linux, compared to Windoez :D Enjoy, the dicey ride. |

In the rumormill of Canonical ending the Ubuntu 6 monthly release cycle and going rolling, there's been a little retreat on that, and Raring Ringtail will be coming next month. So happened that today was feature freeze, and this morning pulled the pre feature freeze nightly. It's zooming, getting better by the day, kernel 3.80.11 now.
http://www.webupd8.org/2013/03/ubuntu-1304-to-be-released-as-scheduled.html As for BOINC, the locutusofborg ppa pulled 7.0.53 build failed installation because of some widget issue, wanting to get 2.8.12 but expecting 2.8.10, which is odd. Anyway, hacked around and now have the 7.0.53 core client with the 7.0.27 BM [that does have 2.8.12 wxWidgets... running great, and the noted previous post recovery of a previous HostID. We shall conquer! |

In interesting post on recovering deleted files, with the note on the note that this does not work for for SSD drives due their "erase complete" way of doing things: http://worldofgnome.org/how-to-restore-deleted-files-on-linux/
On my previous sound comment, the nightly with the 3.8.0.11.25 kernel suddenly improved, but still unable to have the sub-woofer in the system kick in which makes the big difference between clunky and full sound as I have when running under W7-64 In another thread on BOINC 7.0.54, devs are getting serious on making a public release... waiting on 7.0.55 to be build by Locutusofborg and put that version through the paces, to include most importantly how it acts when the clock is set back. Crunch On (And running Linux on the Laptop has doubled credit over Windows... back in the top 2000 ... Yih Ha.) |

The dogs have it, or as the fun to read article has it, "If Linux were a dog, which breed of dog is your favorite Linux distro?": Which breed of dog is your favorite Linux distro? http://www.itworld.com/it-management/348149/if-linux-were-dog
Meanwhile, my Raring Ringtial is zooming along, but I blew one fuse in the system, by erroneously deleting everything in the apt/cache/archives, to include the critical file of what's on the virtual CDROM. Now I cant update anymore, and how to recover that lists file, dont know. Probably time to move on to the next nightly, and spend a few hours rebuilding all the little tweaks I like there to be. Crunching On. P.S. There's going to be an official Gnome release of 13.04 [but with the aging 3.6 build, rather than the 3.8], for those who don't like Unity [I've come to think it at least much more useful and speedy than Woz/Mac world has to offer]. |
