These two work units are from completely different batches, so the variances between the images is what causes the runtime differences. I just have not seen that kind of variation in speed among the work units. HCC is very consistent. |

Most of the projects follow kind of an order in which work was assembled so within current HCC production you'd not see much variation, but if you grab units wide apart from production, here in beta surely a divers set that has already passed the old app crunch, you'd see greater spread... so I've explained it to myself as what uplinger meant with his different batch observation.

What I see from the lonely Beta I received, on a P4-3.2GHz with HT on, it completed in roughly half the time (and half the points ) from the regular HCC 6.06:

WRT this HCC Beta run, Durational WU Variation was very small for the two tasks I ran on the same system:
BETA_ X0000076080540200610061618_ 1-- Valid 24/03/10 01:33:25 24/03/10 10:13:43 2.35 35.8 / 40.2 BETA_ X0000076080966200610061612_ 0-- Valid 24/03/10 03:03:28 24/03/10 19:35:03 2.37 36.0 / 38.1 Only 2min difference in runtime. |

TimAndHedy,
Is there a plan to test old vs new methods for consistency? 64 Million in would be a bad time to change methods and get irregularities. The output of the two methods should be bit-identical. Theoretically, and, as demonstrated in our lab, and confirmed now in the Alpha and Beta tests, in practice. Our lab has actually been running the optimized code in-house for a while now with no problems. Thank you, Beta testers! Christian Cumbaa Research Associate, Ontario Cancer Institute |

JmBoullier,
So for me this is almost 3 times faster, which is not surprising since this is under Ubuntu 64 which had the infamous huge soft page fault problem and this problem has disappeared now! Great to hear! The major optimization was to rearrange a calculation that allocated/deallocated multiple arrays per pass through an inner loop (called millions of times). Now the largest two arrays in the calculation have been factored-out, greatly reducing the memory-juggling. Our tests on a CentOS 64 platform showed a 2x improvement. I like your 3x results even more! Christian A. Cumbaa Research Associate, Ontario Cancer Institute |
