Dear Colleagues,
I have issues with boinc client after the PC upgrade. I installed Fedora 12 (x86_64) and boinc (client & manager) using yum: boinc-client-6.10.25-1.r20004svn.fc12 (x86_64) boinc-manager-6.10.25-1.r20004svn.fc12 (x86_64) After that I attached to the WCG, but had problems: 24-Feb-2010 23:38:30 [---] Starting BOINC client version 6.10.25 for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu ... 25-Feb-2010 01:42:59 [World Community Grid] Scheduler request completed: got 1 new tasks 25-Feb-2010 01:42:59 [World Community Grid] Message from server: Resent lost result faah10921_ZINC31972204_xMut_md03380_01_0 25-Feb-2010 01:42:59 [World Community Grid] [error] App version has unsupported platform i686-pc-linux-gnu 25-Feb-2010 01:42:59 [World Community Grid] [error] No application found for task: i686-pc-linux-gnu 607 ; discarding As a result, no tasks are visible in the Boinc Manager. Could you please let me know how to fix it? Thank you! |

Yes, seems something changed which is finally getting fixed in the coming client. The TPF is in a older tech post now included in the FAQ index. Here a direct link http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...ead,18901_offset,0#154794

Hello Sekerob, thank you very much!
I created a file cc_config.xml, containing <cc_config> <options> <alt_platform>i686-pc-linux-gnu</alt_platform> </options> </cc_config> and placed it in the /var/lib/boinc directory. After that I restarted the project in the cboinc manager. The client works now, downloads and processes work units. So the issue is solved, thank you! P.S. However, I don't understand why does the client call a Core i7 system as "i686-pc-linux-gnu", even without something like "x86_64" in the name. By the way, I ran boinc in Linux on Athlon X2 and Core2Duo systems and didn't experienced such issues at all. |

I understand there is a <platform_name> variable that holds the default OS name/identifier and this <alt_platform> being there to also facilitate the fetching of 32 bit work, which is the only thing WCG has. When connecting to a project that has 64 bit the order of fetch identification is platform > alt_platform. Don't know, just think it's logical.

NO 64bit apps....no gpu apps....what a hoax. Time to find a project that will make use off all this expensive hardware. What a deception. At least post a disclaimer on the Home page. I thought I was making a significant contribution to curing cancer(which I have). This is outragous!!!!!!

After 5 years+ as a silent member, welcome to the forums.
----------------------------------------True 64 bit compiled apps don't run much faster than the optimized 32 bit apps for a reason... something to do with the expensive hardware's limitations most are unaware about. And whether to run a science app on gpu... well that too depends if there's an actual benefit, so HCC is being targeted as the first WCG project to become also available on CUDA GPU, which was the last I heard some months ago.

All you had to do was delete the new version of Boinc and install the older version that previously worked on your computer. Yes, it will still work on your upgraded Linux OS.
My Linux upgrade automatically upgraded to the new Boinc and it didn't work. Reverting to the older version of Boinc did work great. More software testing needs to be done on the newest Boinc. It's causing too many problems and it's silly thinking of bits and libraries when the real issue is so pressing -- getting those research projects going again. Fix the problem quickly and get back online by deleting the new Boinc and reinstalling the version that previously worked for you. |
