Nasher, although this isn't the thread to be discussing "techniques to improve your chances of getting Beta WU's", I'd firstly query your number of connections/day. In actual fact, I'd recommend you do like I did, and review the numerous threads that are around, and begin to pull together your own notes on methods/techniques/settings that seem to work for people who have the higher levels of Beta badges. This is what I did, and although I've only got the 1 computer (albeit a dual-core), I was successful in both the last and this batch of Beta work (getting 6 in the last batch, and 2 in this).
----------------------------------------Edit : And no, at the moment, I'm not considering sharing my "list of recommendations" - well, not at least until I've got my Gold Beta badge [Edit 1 times, last edit by gb009761 at Feb 4, 2010 7:44:44 PM] |

gb009761,
----------------------------------------I've got 5 machines with 28 cores that send/retrieve a work unit every 8-10 minutes, or so and I haven't gotten a beta in forever. I'm beginning to wonder if there is some bias working against Windows x64 machines and/or the newer BOINC 6.10.x 64-bit clients. Maybe I'll downgrade to the "recommended" version to see if that helps. Can you divulge which client version and OS you're using? |

I'm using XP, Vista (32 and 64).
----------------------------------------No problems getting Betas. Also have a mix of BOINC ver.'s.. It's just timing. Asking for work when Beta's are available. |

pirogue, as others have said, a lot of it is down to luck - being at the right place at the right time (in fact, last night, I nearly missed the boat, in that I'd just finished work and was checking the forum for the last time, when I was surprised to see knreed's post - at which time, I implemented my "strategy").
----------------------------------------Anyhow, as to my set-up (which is absolutely nothing special); BOINC client version 6.2.28 for windows_intelx86 Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7300 @ 2.00GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 11] OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Professional x86 Editon, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00) Edit: btw, being in the right place at the right time, is currently my strategy #15 (out of 19 I've got listed). It is been amost 24 hours since these have gone out. The ones I have have are 10%-60% complete depending on the system. No wingman completions yet.
----------------------------------------It has been so quite I felt the need to report something!

pirogue, as others have said, a lot of it is down to luck - being at the right place at the right time I guess I'll have to get a few more machines up and running so that they send/return units every 1 minute instead of every 8-10. |

The Betas I am running use about 180MB RAM on one system and 204MB on the other; W7Pro 64bit and Vista Ult 64bit respectively. Both systems have 4GB DDR2 RAM and are multicore systems. the later is also running GPUGrid tasks.
----------------------------------------Hypernova, I have been to the same place, many times. It's no picnic! But there is always a next time You wont have to wait 4 months for the next time either Over the next few weeks and months there will be several more rounds of Betas - its Beta season! I think VM is more of an issue than actual Memory usage - as my two have a Memory Usage of 214/209 Mb and a VM usage of 688/682 MB usage respectively. I'm glad to see the Page Faults are reasonable (currently 58,351/56,957 respectively).
----------------------------------------At the moment, the first (BETA_erlc_a060_ps0000_1--) is at 42.000% after 23:09 hrs of CPU time, with another 27:50 hrs estimated. The second (BETA_erlc_a081_ps0000_1--), is @ 30.919% after 17:15 hrs, with another 32:21 hrs estimated. My guess is that both these will be > 48 hrs on my system. So far, no other wiingmen have reported in. |
