shock Every Rice Program Fails

First an apology - I have ignored this problem for too long...

Since joining WCG, ALL (dozens) Rice programs that have been downloaded to my computer fail. The failure seems to be consistent for every program - the program will start and within seconds a dialog box pops up indicating and error.

Today a Rice program was downloaded and failed. Here is the Bonic messages for today:

This problem is specific to to the Rice Programs - no other WCG program has failed to my knowledge. In fact, I am not aware of any SETI or Cosmology failures on my computer. CPDN will have a rare failure, but that is only after days of calculations and these failures can be expected.

I am confused about this problem. Any opinions?

Re: Every Rice Program Fails

-1073741819 (0xc0000005)

Bad time! We have had a few devices showing this error these last weeks and it is not a funny one because wherever I have looked (here, Einstain, Malaria, Berkeley...) causes are still not clearly identified.

If you want to fight it you might review these four threads (with little hope):
Got several error WU
error with RICE
Compute Errors
BOINC: Unrecoverable error for result "r...-1073741819 (0xc0000005))

Personally, if I were hit too often by this nasty bug on a specific device with a specific project I would simply unselect this project for this device.

Sorry for not being more optimistic. Jean.

Re: Every Rice Program Fails

Could be a client thing. Had one device that refused to run RICE under 6.2.28, killed upon first disk write, but when using the 5.10.45 it would work fine. Starting from 6.10.xx alpha they run properly again so once the final WCG tested 6.10 comes out it may suddenly be working again. To emphasize, that was on 1 specific device on Windows XP.

edit: Upgraded to W7-32 bit they still work fine on that comp with 6.10 test client.

Re: Every Rice Program Fails

Jean and Sekerob, thank you for your help.

I think I should add some more information about my setup/issues:

Dell Studio XPS 435mt with one i7 Chip (factory 2.67Ghz) purchased in April 2009
8GB of DDR3 RAM
Vista SP2 (64bit) with all updates loaded when they become available
Malware scans are done five times a week with Malware Bytes program
Norton Antivirus Scans several times a week
Computer is shut down at least once a day
In September 2009, this computer had a major hardware 'event' - the Power Supply, CPU/Motherboard and SATA board were replaced. The RAM, GPU and Hard Drive were ok.

The problems I am having with the Rice programs started in mid April 2009 when I joined WCG - no change in the error rates occurred after the computer was largely rebuilt in September. I reviewed the links you provided, and as you expected, I could not find an obvious answer.

There where a couple of points that I thought were interesting though:

It seems that the threads indicated that these errors are recent problem - I have been having these errors since mid April. During that time, not one Rice program was successfully completed. In addition, as far as I can tell, the Rice program will error out after only a few seconds of run time.

Laptops seems to be more susceptible to this issue - the Dell is a mini tower.

As Jean suggested, I am inclined to remove my device from this project, but could the programmers gain any useful knowledge by this device continuing on this project?

Thanks

Re: Every Rice Program Fails

confused
Well, suspect the security programs. One way to check is to run out the cache (selecting no new work) then change the profile to Rice only. Once they are all downloaded (not a big cache, please) unplug from the internet and exit all the security programs. Then see if Rice will run. If it does, then you know you will have to start changing the settings on your security programs. If not, then shrug, abort everything, reboot and reconnect to internet. Then change your profile to NOT select Rice.

Re: Every Rice Program Fails

It's been a longer thought on my part, securities, AV, permissions, except, where I had 6.2.28 and 5.10.45 pointing at the same data_dir. That truly blew my mind... and accepted that BOINC is weird, in understatement.

Re: Every Rice Program Fails

Turned off the security and tried another Rice program - same type of failure.

I have unselected Rice for now - if it would help troubleshoot the problem, I can change back.

Re: Every Rice Program Fails

You probably have already done this, but the computer I had that runs Win 7 Beta had problems Erroring out of no where for a few days. I have ran BOINC on this system for months with no trouble. The computer is an HTPC so is never shut off. After rebooting, it miraculously started running perfect again. Really weird. And yes, it would Error out on ALL projects, not just WCG/Rice.

Edit: Here is an example of the Wu's I had trouble with.
